Hi
If you want to increase the drainage I would use Perlite this is better for drainage than Vermiculite.

Thanks Steveg. Have heard of Perlite, thought it was the same as Vermiculite. Looking on this web site, just makes me realise how very little I do know. Thank you once again.

There's very little difference between the two, Auntsally - Perlite is neutral ph, Vermiculite more or less neutral, Perlite lasts longer, but both aerate and hold moisture in the soil.

I forgot to say that Perlite's better for outside culture, mostly cos it lasts longer.

Can I bring grit into the conversation lol I find it much better for drainage, I usually use vermiculite to scatter around the top surface to stop water and soil from splashing up onto smallish plants like alpines, I have never tried perlite although you do find it in house plant compost when you buy them dont you.

I used perlite and vermiculite in my tubs and pots on the balcony to reduce the weight of the pots - worked pretty well, actually, much lighter and the plants grew fine, even at a third to 2 thirds compost.

Vermiculite is also very good for sowing seeds in. River sand is also very good for drainage I have used this for growing crinum and other South African bulbs. I am not too sure about grit though.

Thanks to everyone for supplying answers. The only reason i thought about Vermiculite is because I have some to hand. Using grit would mean a trip to the local nursery several miles away. Trying to be eco friendly. Well that's my story anyway. Thanks once again.
