Have still got apples from last year but there are about 1/4 of the number on the tree this year. But the thin branches are growing very long - should I prune them ?

The tree’s got to be at least 20 years old if that’s what you’re asking D8.

Crikey, I was thinking it's a much younger plant Hank. You should probably just leave it now. When it's dropped it's leaves take off the top growing tip & cut the side shoots about 50%. Hopefully new fruit spurs will grow from the shortened branches

Thanks D8, it’s been a similar height for ever.. will do as you suggest.

You can summer prune, but bit early just yet, summer pruning is for shape, autumn for fruit. As advised, check on the RHS site, or maybe Youtube?

Thanks Grandad, every little helps.

Probably the wrong time of year now but I'd highly recommend the apple pruning guide on the GardenFocused website or the RHS site. Do you know how old they are?
