Plant Identification

Asked on 6 Aug, 2008

We are unsure where this plant came from or what it is. When the flowers die back a small green 'apple like seed grows inside the lantern like casing. Both the stem (which is hollow) and the base of the casing are dark purple/black. The flower itself is a purple/blue open bell. The plant is currently approx 2ft high. Can anyone help please?

Many thanks for your help with this. The plant certainly caused a lot of head scratching. We now have the local nursery asking for seeds as well as a number of neighbours and friends.
