I have ants all over my two silver birch trees. How can I get rid of them please? Theusual ant powder does not seem to have any effect.

The ants will not cause any damage to your tree either, they're only there because of the aphid infestation on the upper leaves and young stems.

I am ambivalent towards ants, if they are not bothering me I won't bother them, but your question and Fractals answer intrigued me as I really knew nothing about ants, so I went looking for information. Why do you want to kill them? If they are not near your house, please leave them alone.
Incidentally, they will be feeding on sticky excretions from aphids on the foliage.
