I would like to plant another virginia creeper where the last one died. Would it grow there and should i remove all the old branches, trunk, roots ?

Probably sensible to find out why the old one died first, but if you want to risk a new one dying by planting it, then yes, you need to remove roots and branches, etc., and replenish the soil before planting with humus rich materials.
