Hi, welcome to GoY, if, on the other hand, you mean the red fox, Vulpes vulpes, if you hold a shotgun licence, or know someone that does, shoot them, Derek.

the plant is pretty but it is invasive so a broad-leafed herbicide will clear it from lawns. The spot on glyphospate type is good if you only have a few. alternatively dig them out making sure you get all the tap root out or it will just regrow from what is left in.

Yeah, been pouring lawn weedkiller on it for 19 years, still comes up every year.
Nursery near us sells the plants for £6.99 a pot!
20 Nov, 2014
Owdboggy - you could undercut them by 50p and still make a fortune :-)

Best of luck getting rid of that !!!! I have it in all my beds and lawns and it just runs riot.
The only thing i can suggest is to spot spray it with Glyphosate. It won't look pretty for a few months but you can overseed the lawn within a week or two.

maybe a howitzer derek .
21 Nov, 2014
aww you have foxes in your lawn? just wait until they have stopped using the den, once its clear just block it so they can't use it anymore. :)
p.s Derek how could you have the idea to shoot those foxes! >:(
21 Nov, 2014
I think and hope Derek like me was joking wl as I would just enjoy the moment that most of us arnt lucky enough to have .
21 Nov, 2014
Sure he was joking - fox and cubs is quite a pretty little orange flowered plant (usually with a hairy stem covered with blackfly!)
21 Nov, 2014
Hi, yes only joking :-) Derek.
21 Nov, 2014
It is incredibly invasive and spreads by seed and underground runners
21 Nov, 2014
And I am not joking, any foxes of the animal kind which come onto my land will definitely be shot!
21 Nov, 2014
not into nature but a gardner how ironic owdboggy

.
21 Nov, 2014
okay derek :)
(owdboggy would you like it if you were to be shot...
didnt think so)

Tell that to the hens and ducks which feed us and to the lambs in the fields around us which get taken. Oh and the outdoor bred pigs are now kept in barns because the foxes were taking all the new born ones.
Better shot than chased by dogs and idiots on horses.
Reaction of people to foxes is often based on where they live, townsfolk see them as romantic wild creatures whereas people in the countryside see them as major pests.

and naturalists see them as part of the ecosystem ob but shot with a high velocity sniper rifle is better than being chased bye dogs and grown men on horses in the same way that being hung is better than being sliced from the toes up with a bacon slicer though neither seam right to me . which was the first animals on this island WE call ours ? not dometic pigs, not chickens or infact people and ducks well they like foxes got bye before we came along . the whole problem with this planet bye far is humans for lots of reasens . ironic again you want to kill indemic species to save ferrel species . we really should learn to live with and respect nature and stop breeding so much before its to late though I think its way past that . I just hope that the animals survive and regaine some balance back when we are long gone as the selfish uncaring `intelligent` species on this planet . they kill the jaguar for eating there cows in the amazon so I guess there a pest like the fox too then . ill get off my soap box now because there is none so blind as those who will not see .

You can come and collect "our" badger any time NP! I used to think it would be wonderful to have foxes and badgers in the garden until I tried it. But I wouldn't shoot them - even apologise if I tread on a snail by accident, which doesn't make sense because I will use slug pellets if I have to. Nowt so queer as folk, my grannie used to say.
In fact she said "They're all queer except thee and me, and th'art a bit queer sometimes..."
We have to remember though that animals have always preyed on other animals since animals first were around.
Nature red in tooth and claw, and all that.
Just out of interest, what would be your solution to the problem of grey squirrels taking over from our red ones? We can't "un introduce " them - should we try to put it right by killing the grey ones?
Sorry for going right off the qestion.

well from an evolutionary point of view the reasen for diversity is change that a lot of animals can do and survive but probably millions havnt over lifes time on this planet . I don't disagree with killing for food and have killed thousands of pigs and chickens myself . land bridges happen weather changes and different creatures take over . things are just being mightily speeded up by humans who arnt and don't deserve to stay here long the way they are going . killing the gray squirrals just wont work or lots of ferrel creatures like rabbits and pheasants that people think belong in this country and both kinds of rats . all bought here bye humans . animals have to hunt animals and create strong gene pools and keep the wild stock strong and healthy . we as humans have ruled for what ? a 1000 years being generous but probably less . every problem on this planet comes directly or indirectly back to us . huge bombs deforestation bearing in mind England once was mostly wooded but now its quite the opposite . dinosaurs ruled for 50,000,000 years and didn't upset the equlibriem but got killed out for one reasen or another but even then they didn't kill everything else off with them including what keeps them alive . if I had badgers I would encourage them in and watch them with infa red and keep my garden badger friendly the same as the foxes . the answer to this problem for us creatures with huge brains is very simple . stop war and breeding so the population naturally drops ie each couple should have one child and then again and in 2 generations the population would be a quarter of what it is . all peoples drop the religious crap as that hasn't really helped at all . you didn't see t-rex reading or even thinking about bibles and the did really well . the American Indians don't think they own the land and respect it or did till white men came along and stole the land .they only did that bye killing 60,000,000 bison. the same most natives so its more than possible . you didn't go off the question at all . foxes like all life are amazing beautiful animals and belong here and we have given them the means to live even better in urban areas which goes against ideas of us urban folk really . the world wont end unless we go nuclier and then it mite not . it will end for us though unless something very very drastic is done very very soon . theres not enough food now but the population is growing like the deserts are . the forests are shrinking and we are running out of energy . do the maths and you tell me sg x .

Apart from the fact that we never did discover whether this question was about the plant or the animal, when we are talking about foxes, the animal, I must agree with Owdboggy. Talk to a towns-person and foxes are adorable wild, mischevious, and only take the odd chicken to feed their delightful cubs waiting in the den. Talk to a country-person and they will tell you that a fox can decimate a whole chicken house and kill just for the blood lust. I don't know the answer to humans ruining the ecoclogy but I know what I would do to protect my chickens, ducks and geese!

my my my what ever happened to our . jags kill cattle in the amazon ,lions do it in Africa and elephants eat crops in india ,tigers kill people squeezing them out of egsistance . goats and pigs are destroying Australia with there hooves so you do know the answer . blow them away and keep breeding chickens so we can survive better and breed more making more animals a problem so the answer is build more guns and kill not use our brains . do you know why these animals do this ? because we take all there land as ours and protect our chickens, ducks and geese . then we take more . that's it . the problem . people just caring about what they think they own and doing what suits them . trust me and this is know pun . you reap what you sew . tell me if you had a £1,000,000 would you just take one pound to feed your family or the lot ? why should a fox do any different than you if it sees 20 featherd dinners for its cubs in one place ? so greed should be dealt with bye the gun in your logic .
22 Nov, 2014
theres only one letter difference between human and humane but a vast difference in meaning .
22 Nov, 2014
I still can't understand why you would shoot flowers with a shotgun? ;O)
23 Nov, 2014
lol why not it seams its the answer for everything else Myron
23 Nov, 2014
its a tough one, seen in different ways by different people. I loathe and detest guns myself and was happy when the badger cull here was cancelled - and then I did my own bit of culling by running one over in the lane - it dashed out under my wheels at the very last second and there was nothing I could do. it was horrid and I still feel bad about it.
Thinking about the problem as a general principle is one thing though but when your own garden or farm is seriously damaged by them you can see why its done.
I'm going out now to shoot my dandelions...
23 Nov, 2014
everybody I understand that yes we do eat farms animals but that is for a reason, to feed us and yes I do eat beef myself but just as long as the animal is killed in a painless way and for a reason. but shooting foxes isn't for a reason except just empting the lawn, enjoy the animals that you attract to your lawn since others who may put in more effort don't do as well, I don't even have a lawn, I just have a balcony with a few flowers and everything I attract means a large step for my mini ecosystem so for once, just enjoy it.

here here wl

Nobody was shooting foxes on the lawn Wildlife - we were talking about a plant called Fox and Cubs. Wild foxes are sometimes shot when they are eating the chickens that you would like to be eating yourself. I don't like that any more than you do but if you had ever seen a chicken run after a fox had devastated it you might understand a little more. They kill all the birds whether they want to eat them or not and just leave them scattered about, so killing the fox is saving the lives of a lot of chickens. And many flocks of chickens are kept just for the eggs not the meat. What would you do if they were your chickens? Foxes in the suburbs are a different case from foxes in the countryside.
If you are worried about food animals being killed in a painless way go round a turkey processing plant sometime and then tell me whether you want a turkey dinner. If you like I will descibe what happens. Do you know what really happens in an abbatoire? I hate cruelty to animals as much as anybody. If you had rats in your flat I wonder what you would happen to your non killing policy then? A mini ecosystem is great and its lovely that you are cultivating one, but the large scale thing has a lot of kill or be killed in it and you can't avoid it.
And enjoying the animals that visit your garden can involve having every one of your tulips dug up and the bulbs eaten by a hungry badger - happened to us a couple of years ago. You won't get that happening on a balcony. And no we didn't shoot the badger and I didn't support the badger cull either. I love all animals.
Rant over, but lets be realistic.

i know what the question was about(some plants) its just some people were saying that they would shoot wild animals
if i were to keep chickens i would seal the top of a fenced area or make the fennces higher.
also i know that in ecosystems its eat or be eaten and i dont think any wild animal should be shot because we wont use or eat that animal after.
plus i dont eat turky its dry and distasteful, the only meat i eat is chicken, beef and pork and i only buy the halal ones(ones that do not get slaughterd in a painful way.)
if i caught a rat i would throw it outside and use gloves since rats arnt the cleanest animals around.
plus i wouldnt give a crap if a bager did dig up some of my plants.
NOW THE RANT IS OVER
:)
24 Nov, 2014
Do you think chicken keepers are not up to adjusting the fence height etc?
You would be shocked if you saw how meat is raised commercially.
Halal meat is killed by having its throat cut and it is then bled to death. Death is not instant. I would not touch it. Really over now.
24 Nov, 2014
to be honest im fed up now because what started as just telling some one off and joking aroundcsoon turned into an arguement.
24 Nov, 2014
the simple fact is too keep an overpopulation of one species ie humans we are breeding more overpopulations of other species including plants and the whole planet is being raped of its natural balance because of this . breeding more of what doesn't belong and killing what does is not the answer stopping the breeding is whats got to happen . killing something that belongs jst because it does what nature intended is definatly wrong . I worked in a slaughter house killing pigs for consumption and worked raising chickens 30,000 a shed with 6 sheds every 7 weeks and never saw a fox . ironicly its the trend to give the likes of chickens a more natural envirament that's making them targets . it will sort itself out one way or another with or without us. its not an argument its a fact . all animals are bled to death alive just stunned with electric or not . to get the blood out the heart has to be beating .the thing is the attitude of just blow it away without thinking was the wrong part . its know joke . imagine nature as a huge plane and every time a species is made extinct a little bit falls off every time . eventually it will crash .
24 Nov, 2014
You're totally right mate.
24 Nov, 2014
thanx Myron your a good man its simple maths .
24 Nov, 2014
I guess your right but now we must put this arguing to rest
im going stop following this commenting now
25 Nov, 2014
that's up to you and talking to a brick wall is pointless so I agree wl what will be will be . take care .

thanks

your welcome

Do you mean the plant Pilosella aurantiaca, or a fox with a family?
If it's the plant, you can dig it out like dandelions, or use a lawn weedkiller in late spring. Personally I would love to have it in my lawn!
