This is my first attempt at growing runner beans this year. They started off well got to aroun 3ft high and started wilting. I found the bean root had been completely eaten. What is it? Also some smaller plants i have checked have either a white grub in the bean or brown crysalis round them. Please help.

It sounds like Sciarid fly. They seem to attack (in my experience) seeds that have been in wet soil for some time (which may explain the lack of root caused by it rotting). Are they small grubs?

http://www.ladybirdplantcare.co.uk/sciarid_fly.html has a pick, but they do vary. Try Googling it too.
