Thanks for the contributions. I feel there is no prblem may be as a new grower I need more exxperiments. The plants are now over a meter tall and are only flowering. The name one the packet of seed was Iris but not sure about the next word.

Then they are definitely not potatoes!
NP Noeline expressed concern that her 'potatoes' had grown over a metre in height sounds to me like they are iris and this is fairly normal for an iris.
