i have an 8 year old Cordyline australis which has just had its first flowers. but also has lots of "babies" growing at the base. what are these and do i need to remove them?

No need to remove them, they are just shoots. Not sure if they are called suckers or not, but you can just leave them and they will grow just like the parent.
