I know they get so large! I planted one last year for fun and I had to down size it. I don't think it liked it very much. When I did grow veggies I never took off leaves as they had enough space. On the odd occasion one would escape picking and get very large......so the answer is.... if you want a decent crop try not to remove leaves.
