something hardy for a large square garden container, currently has a large cordyline which is getting very woody, any suggestions for a replacement please.

If you currently have a cordyline in the tub, I am assuming the situation its in is sunny, because you haven't said. If you like that kind of plant, get a Phormium of some variety instead - they don't develop the woody stem.
