Acer palmatum, My neighbour has two acers and we've seen small white balls with a hard brown cap going up the trunks from top to bottom. my acer is free from this. Any ideas, please.

Were they actually moving? Sounds like scale insect or wooly aphid. These may spread to yours so watch out for them.
