I have a fatsia japonica that has grown too large for the garden & needs cutting down. If I keep one of the newer branches that are cut off, would it root if potted?

fatsia can be cut back quite hard and still grow .

No idea, might be worth a try - cuttings from this should be taken in late June or early July, using semi ripe stems.
