I have small brown scaley bugs attached to the trunk of my Acer, they have a sticky white cotton like substance on the underside .Can anyone tell me what they are and how can i get rid of them,im worried they will damage the tree .
Many thanks

i have woolly vine scale on my blackcurrants.
these sound alot like them. they are all about the same in habit.
rub them off with a cloth and a bit of soapy water.
i think its the wrong time of year to spray with certain chemicals but have a look for one which does scale insects, thats if you have a real problem with lots of them, they will weaken the tree after a while.

I have had these before, all I done was pick/knock them off with a knife and give them a squish. You can then spray with a soapy soloution like plantmaiden says.
