should calluna vulgaris and hibernica be cut back seasonally? they appear brown with very little green right now

All heather types should be trimmed over with shears to remove the dead flowers, after their flowering time. This can be different depending when they flower. There should be new growth lower down. Don't cut them back hard, just remove most of the brown flowers.
