I have longiflora ones and other species ones in the borders for 7 yrs and they dipped in the 2nd yr but go from strength to strength now. They are buried deep 6"+ and I watch out for lily beetles.

I have planted three Cardiocrinum giganteum this year. They should flower. I understand that once the flowering stem dies back you will get more flowers from the bulbils that have been growing around the parent bulb. There seems to be two large bulbils attached to the main bulb but I will need to wait till next year to find out what happens.

Scotsgran yes once your Cardiocrinum's flower the main bulb will die off and it may be two or three years before the bulbils get big enough to flower. We went mad when we were last at Cluny and bought a whole heap of at different stages.

Hi it is reccomended that you buy at least 3 of these, as Mg says , at different stages of development, so that you have flowers every year, Derek.

I bought three but the GC only had ones at the same stage of development. I can put them in different areas as they need plenty of space for those huge leaves which are not at all like other lily leaves. I have never seen them on sale before as growing bulbs. I obviously don't shop in the right places Yet!.

SG if they are all at the same stage of development chances are they will all flower in the same year. The bulbuls will send up leaves the following year(s) until ready to flower… This one is a bit of a challenge to keep flowering on a regular basis in the garden.

That is life Mg. I am have sown some Cardiocrinum seeds given to me at the Glasgow show with the instruction to sow in September. The donor did add it might be seven years before I saw some flowers. I am one third of the way through year one already. Time flies these days so I can wait.

Next question
I planted three tree lilies three years ago so they do not need to be lifted or split yet. They did not grow to the advertised height but were taller in their second year. My brother has grown them for a number of years and his like mine are still throwing up one stem. I'll be interested to read any other answers given.
