We have a small garden and it is overlooked by a horsechestnut tree close to one fence - can anything grow underneath or in it's shade?

Answers

Yes indeed. There are a vast number of plants that will happily grow in the shade. Have you ever visited Beth Chatto's garden in Essex. If you haven't, I recommend you do for both plants, and inspiration. She has an area of the garden devoted to shade loving plants.
