Window Boxes

I have purchased sell watering window boxes but didnt get up in time for planting this year. Any thoughts on a inexpensive way to water while on vacation? I seen these spike type items you can attach to plastic bottles to keep the soil wet but was certain how well they would work. I also have 6 boxes so wanted to not spend too much.
