Another tried and tested, but rather ugly, solution is to lay plastic bottles filled with water around until they decide to go elsewhere. For some reason they don't like it!

I think they see their weird reflection in the bottles. Get a strong water pistol and give them a good blast, nothing is worse in a garden than cat poo. You could try the sonar cat scarer , it worked for us, but my grandaughter found it affected her ears.

If you have a large expanse of soil which isn't densly planted then you could try some membrane with gravel over the top, or you could lay chicken wire on top of the soil and cut hole for your plants then cover that with wood chip, not bark chip. This is some thing they can't dig through! Otherwise plant more plants in the bed so the foliage is more dense and that will deter

I agree, cats love bare soil especially if newly dug. Fill it up with lots of plants - the pricklier the better!

I often find small stones thrown just behind them (NEVER at them) seems to do the trick. I have yards of bare soil in spring when my veg patch is newly planted.
NEVER EVER throw things AT animals

I put netting around all the plants before putting rocks down so they would have no space to dig, they did their business right on top of the plants.
for the last week ive had a container of jayes fluid under the soil and they haven,t been back since.
