Our lilac flowerng azalea, positioned outside our kitchen window, has grown to 2 metres in hight, help, how and when can we give it a drastic cut please, many thanks,Helen

You certainly can renovate (cut hard back) ericaceous plants such as Rhododendron's, Pieris and Azalea's but you should really have done this no later than March/April. It takes some guts and cold sweat to bite the bullet and do this as you have to do every stem. If you just prune back selected stems, these just die. You have to do them all to force the bud tissue under the bark of all to sprout.

A general feed around the rootball out as far as where the canopy formerly grew to plus a good mulch of either composted bark or ericaceous compost around the base is useful too.
