I moved some by keeping as much soil around the roots as possible and keeping them well watered until established.

Love it! They actually banned the sale of these where I live! Shame, I think they are beautiful.

Why the ban Gillian? Are they considered invasive or is it the seeds?

I guess it's because they are the opium poppy family Grammazoo. Don't tell anyone but we've just found some wild Cannabis growing in our garden too.

They are, Lori. I seem to have loads of them this year! Do you know what the genus/species is?

not sure but think it might be somniferum...They are strictly annuals aren't they? Mine are. but they seed like crazy and over winter easily..I have seen them growing (not very large mind you) in pure sharpsand that builders use as backfill around foundations... tough little fighters...in really good soil I've seen seed pods that are huge and filled with tons of little grey blue seed. I have an aquaintance with Balkan ancestry who grows them to use the seeds on her baking...(bagels, mmmmm)

Hi Lori - i Googled it and yes you're right about the name. Have a look at Wikipedia on this plant - some really interesting facts about it on there. :-)

Not sure how we came to have this - it self-seeded freely in our old garden and does so here.
One of many different poppies in my garden
Papaver type poppy self seeded in my garden. Looks like peony poppy. Not sure of name.

Just popped up within the last week or so. Originally must have blown into my garden, but over the last two years has come up in the same area. Just counted 20 seedlings coming up so far. Does anyone know how to move them successfully without them dying as I havent had any luck they just die on me. Trouble is where they are is not where I really would like them to be.
