hi Celandine
aeoniums are my latest passion. i run a small nursery and we specialise in coastal hardy shrubs and succulents. so far i have got seven or eight types. i just love the shapes sizes and colours.i have planted trial ones outside here in pembrokeshire, this ones been outside about 3 years.

Hi Sandra, Mine are in the greenhouse in winter. I only dare put them out in summer. If I had lots I could try some outside.

I've got this and it has gotten so leggy that I was thinking about taking it out. How do you keep yours so nice and compact?

you have to be brave and cut the top off!!!!!
if you have enough stem you could cut off a three inchs and root it in a mix of sand and compost to give you another one!!!!
thats how i get mine for the my nursery.

Lovely plant! I have asked this elsewhere, but I'll ask again here - I have one of these which is now a single rosette on a 10 inch stem. How do I encourage it to branch?

Mine branched of it's own accord. I think it does so as it grows taller.

That is very unusual, at least it looks it to me. It certainly is an arbor ( tree ) lol. Big all right.

I used to have these and now and again I would snap a branch off to give away, and two or three new rosettes would come from the gap. They are so strong in the right climate. In the spring, it would send out a massive yellow cone-shaped flower.

Like Hywel I had a large one also and mine just died as well. I have many cacti and succulents and they do very well but this one just didn't make it. Wish I knew what I did wrong.

Thats a shame Mike :o( I don,t do anything special with mine , they stand outside all summer and then are put in the greenhouse over winter .in fact they are something that get ignored most of the time .poor things ,perhaps they like to be left alone lol

don'y you just love it when they flower? do you have any other types of aeonium?

i find the problem time for aeoniums is the winter.
too much water and the stem rots not enough and all the leaves drop off.
from november till march only water when it has realy dried out. never let them stand in water. less is definately more.
if you have to bring them into the house for the winter make sure they have good light. Amy has it right they seem to thrive on neglect!!!

hi Pete
i've just brrought mine in.
stop watering...only water when very dry....don't worry too much about the leaves in winter as long as the stem stays good it will come back in the spring.
On question - winter care
29 Oct, 2008
Hello Chewcat, yes agree with Sandra, they're quite tough plants but need light and free draining gritty compost, the drier the better in Winter. If it gets too stemmy you can cut them off in Spring and it will shoot from the stem tip. Then pot up the cut offs as near to a rosette as possible and it'll start again!

I bought mine in not so long ago and chopped the top off stuck in a pot full of compost and it is growing fine. The remaining stem has sprouted new shoots in about 6 places so at the moment it's a win win situation.
