Hello Joebell... So glad my picture gave you a happy memory. I too have loved horses since I knew what they were...these particular horses made me feel a little sad...they are working animals but they are not used much nor are they exercised. they had been outside all night on a raw early spring morning but they were still curious to see a stranger in the neighbours laneway. they came to the fence and I felt bad that I didn't have some sugar or an apple to offer...

Hahaha...Yes Jacque, I remember my Dad saying that they could smell the barn...and if a Percheron decides he wants his feed and water you'd better not get in the way!

On a gardening forum, I forget to mention one of the best things about horses on a farm....horse poop. Put a layer of it below soil in a hotbed...In this climate (Northern, North America) even a hotbed is only good into December, Unless of course you have a ton of snow to mound around it...like this winter!.

Ahhh - lovely. Reminds me of younger days, when I used to ride on crisp sunny frosty mornings and you could hear the hooves crunching through the ice on the track and see the clouds of vapour coming from the horses breath...sadly, riding in this country has just become SO expensive - mostly due to 'insurance claim culture'. It's put a lot of stables out of business :-(

my OH used to work in racing and i used to have 2 or 3 hotbeds going every winter, great for veggies and getting seed going, then i used to plant them up. my mother used to use it on her roses. i have seen in the french pyrenees some old farmers use them in the fields at haymaking, it's a rare sight though.
