Super pic Linda. We also get these visiting the feeder, thanks to Bloomer telling me what attracted them :)

I have a Niger feeder on my Apple trees which is where I last saw the goldfinches unfortunately its to far from the house to keep an eye on any visitors ....

We found they just ignored the Niger seeds ,Amy,and they just kept going mouldy,so had to throw too many away..but they go mad for the sunflower hearts...much cheaper too ! :o)

Hi Amy, yes Bloomer is right they absolutely love sunflower seeds. We tried Niger seeds and they weren't really that interested in eating them. We have a pair of Blue-tits nesting in our box.

I think it was a marketing ploy to get us to buy the Niger seeds,Linda..making out it was the ones that Goldfinches preferred...not in our experience, was it? I haven't tried the Sunflower seeds, just the hearts...but no complaints from the Blue tits,Sparrows either..even the Robin will have a go :o)

Thanks both I have some sunflower hearts I'll swap them over tomorrow x

17 Apr, 2017

They won't take long to find them ,Amy :o) x

17 Apr, 2017

Yes Bloomer, I have the sunflower seed hearts already de-cased as well. In the past you could only buy the ordinary sunflowers seeds, although I suppose some of the birds haven't got the strong beaks to be able to take them apart easily.

I suppose so,Linda..I also found, when I used to buy the mixed packs of wild bird seed, most of it was scattered on the floor,a lot of it uneaten..all trial and error,so glad I have at last got something they all like ! Lol The Pigeons can't get at them either,or Magpies..as the feeders have a canopy on the top,to keep the hearts dry,and it's where they perch...cruel,aren't I ?

18 Apr, 2017

Good idea Bloomer, we get 6 Woodpigeons here and two Magpies and yes they eat a lot!!! I put a coat of wood preserver over the wooden bird-table today. Looks a bit smarter now.

19 Apr, 2017

Lol,Amy..keep watching ! :o) x

19 Apr, 2017

Keep us posted Amy of your visitors. Some of the trellis work is going to get a coat of preservative too Bloomer....and the fence...well a couple of panels need replacing....

20 Apr, 2017

Des res in Derbyshire ,Linda..the word will get round to your feathered friends, that this is the place to be..:o)

20 Apr, 2017

Trellis done, looks better and I didn't make too much of a mess either.....LOL.

20 Apr, 2017

Well done,Linda..my OH decided to touch up the top of the fence where the birds perch, the other morning..it started raining,so I keep looking for birds with dark green feet ! Lol

20 Apr, 2017

They are such a joy!! we have stopped feeding the birds as it encourages the badgers, and we just can't afford to keep replacing damaged fence panels any more, most of the neighbours are in their 80s and it was getting them down, the constant damage....

20 Apr, 2017

Love it Bloomer....Haven't seen our Badgers for a while now DD.

21 Apr, 2017

We know where ours are just two doors away!! the whole of the garden is just one enormous sett!! Rural England have granted him permission to have them taken away, but he won't pay, so now the garden and the house is just falling into a state of disrepair, like an enchanted forest!! not ideal for any of his immediate neighbours!
