Hornet

Hornet

It doesn't look real, the markings are perfectly symetrical and beautiful, I bet it could cause a lot of pain if it decided to attack - quick shut the door.

2 of my pups were stung today, not sure what by but they have quite big lumps, poor wee things.

How about lady bugs??

Oh poor pups, bet it was a wasp there are a heck of a lot about, dab some vinegar on the area that might ease it for them. Please post a picture of your Bee mosaic when it is done, I bet it will be beeutiful lol :o)

Dangerous things Barbara...carry a nasty sting...don't like to see them at all...like wasps the best one is somewhere else lol....

Sorry to hear about your Pups getting stung, Lulu...hope they'll be alright...I spend most of Summer trying to keep the youngest Cat away from stingers...awww poor things...

A Bee Mosaic...sounds really nice...

Aw Lulu I feel sorry for your poor little pups. My little Otis got stung on his nose twice last year by a wasp. He was too daft to move away and kept on sniffing it. I could not move him away for anything even after he was stung.............daft dog. He was ok though just very confused :O(

Oliveoil you are really brave getting that close to a hornet, I would have run the other way screaming lol. I too used to think they were beautiful until I heard they attack honey bees :O( I love honey bees, so now they just seem sinister and mean.

Oh believe me if it had moved you would not have seen me for dust. lol.

LoL Oliveoil!
I shared my studio with a hornet last year, didn't know then what it was. It left me alone though!!
Pups are fine thank goodness, I worry more about adders but touch wood not seen any here!
Bee mosaic is stick down just trying to decide on the background colour......have tried green and blue, red now have thoughts about my original instinct........cream, so it makes the bee stand out!?

You are definitely braver than me Olive, I wouldn't have even got the camera out.

That's that then, I am definitely never moving back to England!

They like a decent climate normally Karen...we have them here, horrible things...and they're very partial to the broad leaf ivy, with big white flowers...there will be loads of them on one...

6 Sep, 2011

Oh no, now I'll have nightmares! I should be safe though, no sign of a 'decent' climate here!!

:(((( aww

You are a coward Karen, they are beautiful creatures, just a little on the large side when they visit in the kitchen especially at night, everyone here runs for cover except me I have to deal with them. I just switch all the lights out and leave the outside light on they fly to that -SIMPLES- Sammie nearly passes out when she sees one. lol. not funny if you have a phobia of bees and wasps etc. Hope Gareth is well prepared for her hatred of anything that buzzes.

This is a great shot Barbara!

Thanks Michaella :o) Prefer these to snakes lol.

Hope the pups are feeling better today. My cat Dusty tries to chase the wasps that come inside the conservatory but we are trying to catch them first. There is a nest across the road somewhere. Wasps do have a good side though and I don't know if hornets do as well. They take greenfly and small larva back to their nests to feed their young. They don't last the winter though because they don't store honey to feed the hive like bees do.

Linda, is there a good side to an Earwig? Cause if you know of one it would help me not to hate them quite as much! :))

16 Sep, 2011

:0)) DOn't know much about earwigs except they love dahlias and a very long time ago in the playground at school I used to poke them out from the holes in the cement fence posts with small sticks. LOL.

Yes, they are very difficult to kill! I had some on the roses I brought in for a vase...they ran all over my work surfaces. Some of them had to be squished three times before they would give up living!! After I wrote that comment above I did a bit more research in to them. They are eaten by birds thank goodness, though why on earth a bird would want to eat one is beyond me...must be a pretty tough morsel I would think! So, lets hope the thrushes and blackbirds and starlings keep them under control!

18 Sep, 2011

...oh, and they DO eat aphids!

18 Sep, 2011

that's good news then Karen :o)

18 Sep, 2011

Saves spraying then.
