I need to do some research Karen. Its a big lump of wood and it would be a shame not to keep it.

A lovely idea Dawn , Ferns would be ideal plants for a Stumpery , I have seen one using the tree roots turned so that the roots point to the sky and then used like a kind of fence with all sorts of ferns and ivy etc. it looked great ... I always think of it when I see a tree that has been cut down leaving the root lying where they have left it to rot ... good luck with yet another idea :o))

Hi amy, I thought of ferns and I think I have enough shade. Funnily enough, to the right of this we have a huge tree stump from one of the old apple trees, but the roots arent very long, dont know if it would work like the one you describe Amy, its massive and can't be man handled

The roots don't have to be long Dawn I'm sure your apple tree stump could be used like that , even on it's own it would look nice with ivy trailing down and other plants in the centre , if it's quite high you could even put Clematis trailing or a climbing /hanging rose for the colour ... They are big you don't want to start moving them about .. .....

Oh Amy, you have such good ideas. If we did this with the apple stump it would save so much work. The dead tree in the photo has been jet washed by John, lol and given a spray of bleach to whiten it, I'll take a look at how it looks tomorrow.
