Some do not want to give up (Life of Pi film)

I saw a wonderful film this week, which was declared the most beautiful film of the 2012 and a technical marvel. I was swept along. I must say, I do not go often to cinemas.
But this time, somebody recommended this film to me.
Please, do not read critique on this film in newspapers, simplifying it into magic realism or computer technique used in a marvelous way. It is not just a story of an Indian teenager who shipwrecked in a lifeboat with Bengal tiger. I was swept by intensity of messages that film has.
The final scene, when adult survivor narrates his story to writer, reminds me a small Cuban boy, who fled with his mother and some family membersfrom Cuba. Their boat, directed to the US shores, shipwrecked and they all died, just boy survived. When coastal patrol found him in coastal waters after days, he narrated, that he had seen Virgin Mary, who sent to him a white dolphin. That dolphin pulled him to the shore. They said he had hallucinations. FBI later took the boy from Cuban family in Florida and sent him back to Cuba. I was very disappointed by this act. When my English friend asked me why I was disappointed that he had been sent home, I answered – because he survived. All America was created due to people who survived. For me it was like conclusion of this film, narrated by the main heroe. Great film, says much more then Avatar and other nonsenses.
If you go, you will not repent.

Still hoping to get to see it. Just not had much free time lately.

The Life of Pi!! I read the book, and want to see the film but havent yet. Thanks kat, i was told the scenery was amazing ~ is that right?

10 Feb, 2013

Amazing. It is 3D film, so we got special glasses and because the film is mostly showing miracles of the nature, it is in 3D format astonishing.

10 Feb, 2013

im not sure if i like the glasses for 3D films ~ they often give the option of 3D or normal?

i might be sea sick if i watched this film in 3D

10 Feb, 2013

I argued with them at the beginning for the same reason, lol. But they told me it is only in 3D version. First moment was little bit strange, but I accustomed and at the end even didn´t realise the glasses on my nose. Only when I had to wipe tears :)

10 Feb, 2013

aw, kat! now you should read the book!

10 Feb, 2013

Wonderful film...my cat will forever be Richard Parker!

10 Feb, 2013

did you read the book andrea? i would be interested to know how it compares

10 Feb, 2013

I have experience, that films are usually not so expressive and compliant with the books. Therefore if I read the book I would like to see the film, but never vice versa.

10 Feb, 2013

yes i agree kat, thats why im wondering about seeing the film, if the scenery is really good though i could still be tempted!

did you ever see geisha girl? film or book?

10 Feb, 2013

It's on at the cinema here, but have not seen it yet. Les Miserable is also on, & really want to see that .....maybe we will have to see both. I enjoy watching in 3D.

10 Feb, 2013

i have been to see the les mis film. did you see it as a show dwyllis?

10 Feb, 2013

Have not read the book ...but the film, especially in 3D is lovely. One of those magical films that transports you to another world, and certainly leaves you thinking.
I would be interested on your thoughts on the `Les Mis` film...I have never seen the theatre production.

10 Feb, 2013

Is that `Geisha Girl` by Arthur Holden...absolutely loved the book, never seen the film though.

10 Feb, 2013

glad you recommend life of pi ~ thanks andrea, i think i might go to see it now, i like films that leave you still thinking!

sorry to say i really didnt like les mis film ~ but if you havent seen the show it is probably fine. OH liked it and he has seen the show. usually i dont like theatre but for some reason for me the show is so full of feeling that the film doesnt match. [i have seen the show 3 times] i wonder if its because for some reason i couldnt relate to the characters in the film, even though im sure they were amazing, it didnt seem real and i like films to feel real!!!

yes i think thats the one ~ geisha girl, i loved the book, read it before i saw the film, i really enjoyed the film, it seemed to illustrate some of the book but i would still say book first ~ the film is beautifully shot and worth seeing.

It is interesting to hear that in Australia there are Les Miserables The same it is here. We have musical Les Miserables here since last autumn, too, played in theatre. Seems like globalisation, hm, that´s dangerous.
I saw Les Miserables long time ago, but compared to Greek Zorba, I liked the latter one.
I didn´t read Geisha Girl, as the title and probably also topic doesn´t attract me. In recent years I do not read as much as I did when I was younger. But in recent years I read some really good books, like Kite Runner from Khaled Hosseini or Ark Guardians from Tom Egland. But to be honest, most of all I read classic authors, recently I was impressed again by G.M. Marquez "Love in times of plague".
There are many good books, which I would have never time to read, that´s pity :))

11 Feb, 2013

Andrea@what do you think, did Richard Parker have to sneak a last look at Pi, or not? :))
What you wrote about the film, that it is the one which transports you to a different reality...didn´t you have impression that something similar you already experienced? Because I have that impression. But those memories or experiences are very spiritual to be shared. And here I saw them on screen. Yes, I agree, strange film. Definitely not for police and army officers.

11 Feb, 2013

I loved kite runner, amazing book but wasn't so keening is next book.
I wouldn't have chosen geisha girl because of the topic like you kat but it wasn't like that.

11 Feb, 2013

My prejudice.
Maybe I will read this one later, but still have several new unread books on my shelf. Must read them first. But no time. Days are shorter as we grow old, lol.

11 Feb, 2013

oh, sorry just noticed ~ meant to say not so keen on his next book. sorry i wasnt concentrating!

its good to have books lined up ready to read ~ you wont get bored!

11 Feb, 2013

I want to see Life of Pi but cannot watch anything in 3D, it hurts my eyes, Les Mis is also one we want to see, went to the show and have all the music so really looking forward to it....
The little Cuban boy, I remember seeing that on the news if I have the correct one, it was heartbreaking I can picture him being held in someones arms when they were fighting against his extradition...

11 Feb, 2013

That was the one.

11 Feb, 2013

Lincslass i would love to know how you get on with the film.

11 Feb, 2013

its at the Showcase in Peterboro Sticki, the reason we haven`t been is because daughter is waiting to hear whether she will be made redundant in two wks time, we both know that you cannot go to see Les Mis... if feeling a bit down as one would come out feeling downright suicidal, not a good thing if you get my drift....

11 Feb, 2013

This sounds like command, Sticki :))

11 Feb, 2013

its about 3 hours away from me kat! we went to the local cinema 5 minutes away.

yes i agree lincs ~ maybe thats why i didnt like it so much on the other hand i know i went to the first show in the theatre thinking i really wouldnt like it ~ but i did!

lincslass i hope that doesnt happen to your daughter ~ all the best.

11 Feb, 2013

Thanks Sticki, she has been there since leaving school, nearly 25yrs...

11 Feb, 2013

well i hope they dont forget that ~ do they know what loyalty means?

makes me cross when they dont reward and appreciate things like that.

We have seen both Life of Pi and Les Miserable over the holiday period. Funny how different people have a different experience of the same thing. Life of Pi is a great film but I thought the 3D spoiled the viewing of it. It is available in both 3D and 2D and I would rather have seen the 2D version. Les Mis I found very uplifting! The will of the people to challenge the wrong of those in power. Yes, the students got massacred in the film but the will of the people was still to look forward to what could become "Do you hear the people sing"! It is the wonderful music that carries the musical and as a play/action movie I think that it could be very heavy going; rather like Cold Mountain.
In January we saw The Hobbit (horrible) once, Life of Pi once, Quartet, fun film, once, Les Mis three times and now waiting to buy the DVD.

12 Feb, 2013

Bulbaholic@what a cultural life you live, wow :) I have been in the cinema once this month after almost 1.5 year :)
If you like Miserables, I wonder how much you will like the film (only on DVD as it is some 18 years from premiere) "Immortal Beloved" with Gary Oldman starring Ludwig van Beethoven. Great music and story, which is partly connected with the place here in Slovakia. Very interesting film.

12 Feb, 2013

'Cultural', not really Katarina, not now. Several trips to the cinema is our mid-winter treat to ourselves. Unless something spectactular comes along, that was probably it until next winter, or Avatar II.

13 Feb, 2013

I wonder if you are military person...because avatar was popular here among teenagers and military persons. Just my assumption from what I heard.

13 Feb, 2013

Keep wondering, Katrina, the answere is no. I have had this question before because I live in an area where many RAF personel retire to, RAF Kinloss and Lossiemouth, but no, I was never in the military. Avatar seemed to be popular across the whole community up here.

13 Feb, 2013

;-)

13 Feb, 2013

Katerina, we are not so cultured here as you think! When you are old in Britain in Winter, going to the cinema is a good way to stay warm.LOL

13 Feb, 2013

Lol. Well, sometimes it happens also here. I wonder, if those Miserables aren´t played all over the world because of this target group? Lol.

13 Feb, 2013

...I forgot to say, that majority of seniors in Slovakia get around 350 euros when retired. Prices of food and other commodities are comparable to Western Europe, sometimes Austria has cheaper products so people who live on borders like me, go to do shopping there.
These 350 euros usually get teachers, professors, journalists, nurses, physicians. Old communists, who had high salaries in old regime and policemen have higher retirements, as far as I know around 700 - 1000 euros. So former seniors even cannot go to the cinema, that´s the difference, Freeasbird, as ticket usually costs 7-9 euros.

14 Feb, 2013

OK. I decided to come out with a true. For those who saw the film "Pi and his Life" and like it I would like to say, that it´s pleasure for me to say, that I know a man, who participated in this film as a computer specialist. He is Slovak and is also the author of 2 photos I uploaded couple of days ago on Goy- photos with sausage dog and Slovak cuvac playing in the snow :))

17 Feb, 2013

Thats brilliant kat!

17 Feb, 2013

;-)

17 Feb, 2013

katerina your English is really good, did you live here at some point in your life?when you have time post some pics of your garden on here we would be interested to see it.

23 Feb, 2013

Who is it "we"? I have many photos of my garden on the GoY.

23 Feb, 2013

Went last night to see Les Miserables, yes we did enjoy it, you could have heard a pin drop in the cinema, always the sign of a good film, however when compared to the show in both daughter and myselfs opinions the singing did let it down, the actors played their parts well but their voices were not as good as the cast members in the shows, not powerful enough therefore it lacked emotion in some of the scenes, if we had not already seen the show then I guess it would not have mattered.....

4 Mar, 2013

So they had les miserable voices, Lincslass...;-)

4 Mar, 2013

I thought similar lincslass, no emotion, although im not sure i had worked out thats what it was, certainly no feeling like there is in the show.

4 Mar, 2013

Still reduced us to tears though Kat, we won't be buying the soundtrack as we prefer the one we already have.....

4 Mar, 2013

We had recently meeting and were asked to sing all together "Yellow Submarine". Jesus Maria.......;-)

5 Mar, 2013

The difference between a theater show and a movie is the size of the stage that the performers have to cover. In the theater (which I have not been able to see) version the performers are profesional singers with some acting ability. In the movie they are actors with remarkably good voices. I thought that the movie was brilliant and am waiting to buy the DVD. If I was only wanting the music CD then I would buy the 25th Anniversary concert one.
Have you seen the YouTube clip of Hugh Jackman and Russel Crowe singing 'The Confrontation' number in Joe's Pub in New York - fantastic.

5 Mar, 2013

We will buy the DVD when it comes out Bulba, its well worth watching again but not the soundtrack..
