Pollen collectors.

The flowers on one of my cacti recently attracted some hoverflies.
They were there for ages in the sunshine, and I could see them collecting pollen from the anthers inside the flowers.

They didn’t keep still very much, so were rather difficult to photograph,
but I’ve uploaded some for you to see how busy they were :o)

In their native habitat, cacti are pollinated by bees, moths, and some birds – especially humming birds.
But here they’re pollinated by hoverflies lol :o)

Smashing photo's Hywel, they were busy, noticed lots of hoverflies around this year, the verbena and the blue flowers in the pond are the preference for them in my garden......I don't mind them or the bees and will watch them for ages but if the big hornets put in an appearance thats when Susie legs it indoors VERY quickly, lol.....

Very good close ups Hywel. All pollinated so now you can have cactus fruit.
That flower is beautiful.

wonderful photos Hywel, hoverflies are so good for the garden I get a lot down in the dell. When I'm setting on the swing seat, they dart and dance in front of my eyes!
