It’s only 12 miles from here, and we went there last week.
I thought I’d show some photos.
It was a cold day with lots of clouds – rather disappointing for summer ….

Aberglasney House ………

Sunken Garden ………

Lake ……..

… with cafe overlooking

Walled Garden ………

Another walled garden ………

Cloister Garden ………

(They had taken all the plants away. They were doing some work there – it was very pretty last time I saw it. Maybe they’ll put it back after the work is finished)

And the cloisters ………

Woodland Walks and Rockeries ………

Nooks and Cranies ………

Ancient Yews ………

Yew tunnel ………

Old Gatehouse – the original entrance to the property many years ago ………

Shop and plant sales ………

A very historic place which I showed in two previous blogs. See them for some of it’s history and more views.
We went there last week so I thought I’d mention it again and show some photos.

Beautiful pictures - what a lovely place to go and see :))) That Yew tunnel was so great !

5 Jul, 2011

it took us 3 hours from the midlands but with all the other things in the area to see and do well worth it. I got confused though Hywel as when we went on the Welsh Highland railway we passed Aberglaslyn.....

Fascinating photos, Hywel ..
Did you buy any plants ?

5 Jul, 2011

Thanks Paul. I wanted to walk through the yew tunnel but it was fenced off lol.

Hi Pam. Lots of places in wales begin with 'Aber...' and also 'Llan...' It can be confusing if the names are similar. I'm glad you enjoyed Bodnant.
I live in the south west :o) The roads are not very good between the north and south.

Thanks TT :o)
No I didn't buy any. Didn't see anything I wanted. They only had what you'd get in a normal garden centre. Disappointing really.

Bodnant seemed to sell plants that grow in the gardens but then the NT can probably afford the labour

Wonderful place. These are the places I like visiting myself Hywel. I do it on my own and have visited nearly everything within a hundred mile ratio from home. I hope to visit more as soon as I have the time and take pictures to load here and to me website.

Another holiday at home blog. Thank you Hywel. I can't see us ever getting there but you do take photographs of things I would want to look at so it is as good as a holiday for me.

Thank you all. I'm pleased you enjoyed Aberglasney.

Sandra it looked as if some changes were already being made. I hope your gardener friend will make lots of improvements to it. It must be a very exciting job for him.

lovely place to visit Hywel....

The cloisters and the yew tunnel were my favourites....it looks very well maintained and with a new gardener taking over I expect there will be some changes afoot as well.

Being close to home for you there will likely be opportunity to visit again and see what the new gardener has up his sleeve to change or modify the garden. You got some good pictures despite you saying it was overcast on the day.

Great blog, Hywel, how I would love an old brick wall like those in your photos. They set everthing off so beautifully. Amazing tunnel too, glad you enjoyed your visit.

brilliant pic's Hywell!
Thanks for shearing, i'm on the look out for things to do/weekends away with ma pa n nanna, last year we went to the eden centre which was nice but my fave was the lost gardens of Heligan, it also has lots of nooks and crannies and places to wander, beautiful gargens and lots of other goodies.
This year we're going to Kew as ma pa n nanna haven't been before. Now your giving me ideas for next year! You said you'd been before, what time of year would you say was best? I'm gonna have a google and see what else is in the area that we could do, or do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks again.

Lovely blog Hywel. These reclaimed gardens are fascinating. Thank goodness for the Aberglasney Trust. They must have been very busy getting this historic garden back to such a well restored state. Shame we can't travel as we used to due to OH infirmities. This garden would be top of my list.

What a lovely place, thanks for putting this on. Do you mind me asking if it's expensive to go in? The reason I ask is because we were taken to a garden recently which still needs quite a lot doing to it but they still charged what I consider to be full price, perhaps I'm out of touch with prices?
This looks well worth a visit, I like cloisters too and those walled gardens are lovely.

I think I paid £7 or £7.50 I can't remember lol memory failing now ;o) but it was one of those. ...... That was for senior citizens and disabled people. I thought it was a lot.
Prices in the caffe were very expensive aswell I thought - over £2 for a slice of cake ! and not much of a choice either :o( but everywhere is like that now.

12 Jul, 2011

I agree with you Hywell. We went to a farm place near home where we could see Meerkats, otters and an eagle owl, but mainly for children. To get a family in, even on a family ticket was very dear. Food was expensive and ices hyped up in price. They were all outside eating own food. To go in a local country park that was once free, its £2 for an hour!!!!! The art club used to go a lot. Painting and sketching flowers and trees and scenery. It stopped us in our tracks and stopped a lady whose poorly husband enjoyed the company too....couldn't afford it.

12 Jul, 2011

Carers go in free though. When we took my mother in a wheel chair a few yrs ago I went in free because I was her carer.
But otherwise I thought it was expensive. And it isn't that big. An hour or two is enough to see it all.

12 Jul, 2011

We had to pay £6 each and I would say half of the garden isn't really in a state for visiting, some lovely trees and the Borders could be really nice but it needs lots more attention, they have 4 full time gardeners and some volunteers, doesn't quite make sense to me?

I try to think of the piece of cake as a treat or I would never buy one! I never buy cakes from the supermarket.
