They are the hot "new" thing to grow on the internet. I think mostly you can thank the Manila types extra hardiness and sweet fruit. Not many others can thrive as well.

Stan,

I think this is Valencia Pride. It’s a widely grown variety in Southern California, besides Keitt.

Yeah I didnt type that right. I was trying to say that Manila's success in marginal climates has people growing them in places like never before. Socal has been growing them for a century or more.
I once got from the local U's library a book written in the turn of the 20th century about subtropical fruits in socal and it talked of trials of mangoes that went well. Why only now it became profitable I guess is timing and marketing.

Yes, up in Vista there used to be an experimental mango grove (I believe Paul Thompson’s grove). It was started in the 1950’s or possibly late 1940’s. It was to see which varieties did best in SD County for commercial production.

I know mangoes are grown commercially in Fallbrook along with sugar cane. They grow along side the millions of avocado trees. Coffee is the next craze. I know coffee trees are being planted in the shade of avocado trees in northern San Diego County.

Yes, I love mangoes, also! Nothing beats home-grown mangoes.
