It is a beautiful shrub! I like that it's very drought tolerant.

Thats good to know is it hardy to cold winters.

28 Aug, 2017

Not, it's not hardy to cold. It's actually pretty tender. It's native to tropical South-east Africa.

What a shame for me lol funny how Agapanthus is south African and grows here but their other plants dont because of our cold weather.

Ah,to have room to try it.

Stan,

I had one that did well in Mission San Jose, Fremont. It didn't bloom very well because I was always battling the gophers eating it. The gophers love this shrub!

Agapanthus has very hardy roots. This plant is native much further north in South Africa. It native to the tropical areas of North, South Africa. It's native north of Transvaal.

I did nt know that I ll try again then gettimg it dug out and pot it up. Ahrr so they are more in the north than the south of Africa I did nt know that either.

Yes, I think Agapanthus is native to further south in South Africa. That's why it's hardier.

Bauhinia galpinii is very tender to cold and needs a tremendous amount of heat to flower well. Even in the hotter areas of the San Francisco Bay Area, where I lived it didn't bloom too well. It could have been the gophers always trying to eat it, also. LOL!

Thanks Andy.

Would nt be any good here then thats for sure. Quite hot then lol those little gophers they remind me of guinea pigs.

They're little terrors! I used to have so many problems with gopher in the SF Bay Area. Just like the problems Stan has in his yard.

Reading up on your Gophers they do the same damage as our moles here so I can sympathise with the damage they do for you and Stan.

2 Sep, 2017

Yes, I had gophers and moles...they're horrible!

lol I think they are cute but just a big pest

Thats out then. I did try some light purple/white bauhinia in 2000-2004 potted. Never did bloom well. Bloomed..but even the color wasn't very attractive. Nothing like what I see on the internet.
We just glance its zone.
I did see one planted at Niles nursery that had great foliage on it. About 6' tall. When they went out of business..somebody dug it out.

There's some nice orchid trees planted on the grounds of Chabot College. They used to bloom very well...from what I remember.
