Agave americana - Century Plant in Bloom

Agave americana - Century Plant in Bloom (Agave americana - Century Plant)

Many of these plants are blooming now...this is the blooming time of the year for many succulents, cacti and Euphorbia. This Agave is blooming in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Photo taken on Dec. 26, 2009 on a pretty cloudy day.

Love these, the way the flower branches are horizontal to that amazing vertical stem! They're like the dinosaurs of the plant world...:o)

Janey:

They are very amazing when in bloom. However, they are really taken for granted here. They grow wild everywhere...especially in canyons and on the sides of the mesas...where you see dozens of tall flowering spikes.
