Where the Blazes did Spring go?

Yesterday and the day before were pretty much perfect here – the weather settled down to a perfect place – hot (37°) but with a little breeze: there were deep blue skies, birdsong, and garden shops bursting with customers and bedding plants. The greenhouse was emptied before the contents were cooked, the vegetable garden was finally all dug and planted, weeded and fed, beans were twirling merrily up their poles and potatoes were pushing their way through the heaped-up, warm soil, the roses burst into abundant bloom.

Cuckoos cuck’ed, hoopoes hoop’ed, and I settled down on a big dustsheet on the lawn to paint all our plastic “terracotta” pots and tubs a nice, clean, uniform shade before the planting-up began. The bees were humming away, OH had strimmed the orchard, so the scent of roses and cut grass filled the air and a big jug of iced lemonade was on hand.

In the evening we dined out at a little trattoria in the most perfect, mediaeval building, the food was the best we have had in years – if I ever moan about Italian food again, remind me of this – and we were late to bed, wandering home at midnight and commenting on what a gorgeous, warm (still 24°), starlit night it was, and everything was smelling so fabulous too – acacia flowers on the warm night air.
We were rudely awakened again at 3.00 a.m. when a sudden fierce wind started blowing all the open windows and shutters around and blowing things (watering cans) over in the courtyard.
Never really got back to sleep again, You would never believe the difference in the weather – today there are grey, lowering skies, high winds, freezing cold and rain. It’s set to be that way for the forseeable future, too. Gggrrrrrrr! OH has lit the stove again and I’m off to make a start on a huge pile of ironing.
Hey, Ho, Nice while it lasted.

You paint a wonderful picture of your summer days Gattina. Nothing quite beats dining out on a balmy summer evening . . . so glad you made the most of it. Beautiful weekend here (croquet in just one sweater yesterday, lol), and hardening off plants from the greenhouse today. 22 degrees suits me just fine, so will now go and bask in it and finish my book. :)

Outside at night sounds lovely Gattina, its too cold here for sitting out, we have had three good sunny days though so managed to get into the garden, lovely pics of your roses, mine are beginning to show buds so wont be long before we see some here....

It all sounded wonderful, garden blooming dining out starlit night THEN down to earth with a bang! but pleased to here you enjoyed it while it lasted!

Oh my Word - I hope it isn't the only decent weather we're going to get! I have yet to get my bikini on!

your roses and your house look stunningly beautiful.

That last one wasn't our house, Sticki, unfortunately, that's the 13th century trattoria we went to - there's a month's waiting list for a table, mostly 'cos it's so good and 'cos they only open 2 nights and one lunchtime a week. Worth the wait. Shall we book you in?

Certainly looks very inviting!

It will be back Gattina, sounds like you got alot done while it was nice.
If you had to book your table a month in advance you were so lucky to have such a lovely evening for it, book again & see if the weather improves :-)

Big secret - we are best friends with the head waiter, and we got a cancellation! We rarely eat out these days, the Euro being the way it is, but we shall definitely be going back before TOO long. It's a great shame that the menu is fixed - no choices and you don't know until it turns up what there is to eat, so no good for people with dietary problems.
Willinilli, I have no doubt the weather will improve. Eventually. It always does here. Sometimes just a bit too much. I don't think we need to book again just for that. I often wish I could magically transport people here, just for maybe an evening, without all that aviation fuel consumption and hanging around Gatwick. We could book the entire trattoria and fill it with Goys for a big, noisy evening of plant talk!

That sounds great Gattina, will we all sleep with the cats?

13 May, 2012

It sounds better than 'nice while it lasted' to me! 'Absolutely idyllic while it lasted' is how I'd put it! There will be more days like those - sooner rather than later I hope!

Here sun has shone but an icy wind has been blowing to keep it company!

Sounds pure heaven Gattina, why does something always have to spoil it?.. Hope your garden survived the weather shock, I could just do with an evening stroll to a meal under the stars too...:). I'm reading Annie Hawes Extra Virgin set in Liguria, sooo funny, takes me back to our Spanish hillside days...:)

Beautiful roses :)

What a lovely day and evening you had Gattina. Pretty much similar here this weekend. T shirt weather yesterday - gale force winds and pouring rain tonight.
Lovely pictures - that restaurant looks very inviting!

It sounded wonderful ..... but 'all good things must come to an end' is what they say. I don't know why they should. It doesn't make sense to me lol.
Anyway I hope the nice weather returns for you soon :o)

What a gorgeous weekend you had! We had a couple of decent days here too recently but your plants are far ahead of ours. My roses are all in bud with a little colour showing through and as for the beans ...... they're still skulking underground! But - the potatoes are bursting up with vigour, the broccoli look as though they are working out how to grow taller and the broad beans appear to have thought "S*d it! I'm going to flower NOW - even though I'm only 4" high!" Let's all hope for some CONSTANT decent weather soon .... pleeeeeeese!!

14 May, 2012

Yeah, our broad beans are doing exactly the same: I thought I had just chosen a duff piece of the garden to plant them this year. Broccoli still titchy, though. Ditto on the "Pleeeeeeeease" front, Nariz.
Willinilli, the cats would all pack their bags at the first sign of strangers, so the shelves in the cellar would be all yours!

Not a bad weekend here if breezy andstasrted well today until I went to the village....theheavens opened and next minute the roads were running like rivers....suns out now.....

14 May, 2012

Late again..Blooming lovely G. Your roses look so beautiful, I think of all the colours it is yellow or white roses for me. I thought for a moment that was another view of your house too. Visions of you on ladders with watering can in one hand and secateurs at the ready in the other.

The good weather will come soon....you just have to believe.

I did, Pims, and it IS back, just not so hot, which is something of a relief! One or two fluffy white clouds, and showers forecast every day for the next 10 days, but what the heck! Saves having to water everything so much! Sun is out right now, and what am I doing? (apart from writing this blog) Painting a darned bedroom! (One down, two to go) I shall treat myself to a little light weeding in a bit when I've got the second coat on the window wall :o)
