Fall tradition, mass suicide

Each year at hard frost, I get masses of these little bugs who perch on the porch plants and die.

Some type of fly I think. They are the lazy fall fly that makes one think the mosquitos have returned but then realize the season is too late. (We have 27 different variety of mosquito). All of them were clenched to the plant by their mouth. I probably had two or three hundred. It startles me every year.
