Salad/Spring Onion "Redbeard"

Salad/Spring Onion "Redbeard"

With our garden theme, we just had to have this. Sown as seed by my 7-year-old daughter, they are growing "great guns" (pardon the pun). We can see the white and red-streaked bulbs, but top up with compost now and again to encourage more white stems, and crop the growing leaves for use in salads, and as garnishes, which will also help, hopefully, the bulbs to grow bigger.

Defo with the leeks, Crisrtina, but not worth it with the spring onions. In fact, probably shoudn't cover the tops of the bulbs once growing. Picked our first ones, today, in fact. pic coming up!

Sorry I spelled ur name wrong, Cristina - realised then that it was getting dark, lol! If you mean the spring onions, if you have just the beginnings of bulbs forming, might be worth it. I wouldn't worry though, so much, with spring onions, unless you are a devout follower of fancy cooks and recipes which call for the "white" stem parts of spring onions, lol!!! Otherwise, leave alone to grow like big onions, with top half or so above surface.I have posted pic of our red spring onions pulled today! X
