A Cautionary Tale

You may have heard of my tales of woe about the fly attack on the grapes in the greenhouse .
Well last Sunday was the day to adjust the sundial ( there are 4 days in the year when it can be done ), so when I returned from St Bennets we went down to do the biz at noon .
That done we got absorbed tweaking and poking about , as one does once in the garden ; I wandered into the greenhouse to inspect further damage . I had put up some fly papers to try to reduce the numbers , quite successful , but always some collateral damage , moths etc. , but wait a minute , I’ve caught a leaf . What ??
I turned the paper around to look , and what was it ? Along eared bat !! Oh , dear , what to do , I’m ashamed , is it dead ?
I gently touched the tail area and it moved its head .
I caught hold of the tube part of the fly-paper and cut above the bat , so I had it hanging down , and hastily took it to the shaded area under the deck . I put it on some ferns under there and managed to free its open wing , and then the body .
It was still sticky but after an hour or so , it climbed up the wall and disappeared . Phew….. for both of us .
I had some pictures of it , but dropped the camera later and lost the memory card , so it is not recorded for posterity .

Crickey Driad. What a shock. I wouldn't have dared touch it. You did well to rescue it. Sorry to hear about the lost memory card. Fingers crossed it'll turn up.

Hopefully all's well that ends well. I'll bet he avoids your greenhouse from now on.
The memory card will appear when your not looking for it!

Oh dear ! ... I'm glad it worked out well in the end.
It just goes to show we never can tell what will happen.

Oh my goodness! I best you got quite a jolt. Obviously its echo sounding wasn't working properly. What a pity about the camera though, is it broken now?

Thanks everyone , it was quite a shock , but hopefully it is back "at home" now .
My daughter works at a fen for RSPB , and did a twilight walk for families last weekend . She had to gen up on Bats , and she says that they mate about now , so maybe his (?) mind was on something else !
