This lovely place was unknown to us till last week, when our daughter had taken Thomas there the previous Sunday,as there is a lovely play area for children…..word of mouth to her too..She said how beautiful the gardens were, and how much we would like it..she wasn’t wrong..I can’t believe we only live 20 minutes away, and lived here most of our lives, before finding it…
It is a series of walled gardens, all with their own theme, belonging to the Manor House..but now belonging to the local Calderdale council…and what a lot of care and thought has gone into it…
There is also a Jungle House, which for a small fee of £1 ,was well worth a visit…will post a blog and pics of that later….
The start of the approach to the gardens…

Great planter

A tower of Flowers..

The first view inside the walls..

and a nice place to sit in the shade ,just looking…

Eryngium’Silver Ghost’…love these plants..and so did this little Bee :o)

I can’t remember the name of this..so if you could remind me please ?

Walking on past the formal borders….

..to more natural planting…and this lovely arch…dripping with Honeysuckle …and a yellow ??

..is it a Clematis ? not sure….

For some reason, pics of the wildflower borders were deemed to be too big..the first time I have ever had this error..so I will leave it to your imagination..and hope you enjoyed the others…it was time for another seat in the sun ,with an icecream..before braving the heat of the Jungle House !

A very nice place to visit. It's strange how we sometimes don't know what's on our very doorstep.
And good that it's got a play area for children.
The last pic is a clematis tangutica I think (or something very similar). I used to have it in the previous garden. It grows huge.

I've been having messages that my photos are too big now for a while ... it never used to happen before. I re-size them now. It's a nuisance but they load up much faster :o)

Thank you Hywel..glad you liked it..and thanks for naming the Clematis..I'm not familiar with this one..It's the first time I've ever had the message that the images are too big..but not to worry..we all know what a wildflower border looks like :o)...I'm not skilled enough to know how to resize, although I read about it from others on here.. ..I'm too lazy,so I won't bother :o)

I was going to name the Clem .. Hywel did it already :0)
Tangutica Bill Mckenzie I think. I love the Honeysuckle arch Bloomer.

I resize all the photo's before even trying to put them on here now.

What a hidden gem Bloomer. It's not too far from me, so ONE day, when I can get away, may even pay it a visit. Will prob be next year now though. Jx

How amazing that it was so near and you didn't know!
When you go back again look out for the seedheads on that tangutica - they are like wild white wigs!

I still can't believe it,Sue..we go to Halifax quite often..seems all parents of young children are in the know, because of the superb play area there..hence my Daughter telling us about it...and she only mentioned the gardens as an afterthought really....I haven't passed on my interest in plants via my genes, sadly :o(

Great place Sandra, is the white unknown plant maybe a verbascum?:-)

28 Jul, 2012

Thanks Ba..it could be a Verbascum..sounds right :o)

28 Jul, 2012

Another great place to visit and fancy Sandra right on your doorstep! I do love that Eryrnguim Silver ghost would make a lovely statement in the border, and yes the other plant is Verbascum I have one that Janie sent me last year just waiting for it to open its called Snow Maiden so think it may look like the ones in your picture;0))

29 Jul, 2012

You would love it there Carole..and maybe we could fit it in one day? ..Thanks for confirming the Verbascum..I couldn't for the life of me remember !..The Eryngium looks as though it seeds well..I might get one..but I'm just a bit wary about it being so prickly,as Thomas has started 'smelling the flowers' Lol..my fault for showing him,,he thinks they all do ..but he shoves his nose right inside,if I don't watch him:o)..We had to make him blow his nose a few times on Thursday evening,as he had lots of pollen on it..oh dear ! Luckily he was fine, and doesn't look like he has hayfever :o))

Lovely gardens Bloomer & free too!
I'd like to see a blog of Thomas in the play area, I must admit I always have ago on the play things at the park when I walk the dogs, :-)

29 Jul, 2012

Sandra have been doing a bit of reading up on Hayfever as Harry is complaning! about all my flowers making him sneeze!! but seems the problems arise more from Grass seeds than flowers, so let Thomas have a good sniff at the flowers, its never done me any harm! This sounds a very appealing venue to us future wise ;0))

29 Jul, 2012

Thanks Willi..he wasn't with us that day,as his mum had discovered this the week before..the reason we went to find out for ourselves..but I'm sure we will be taking him before the summer is over,so will take some pics then....and maybe me,'pretending' to watch over him ! :o)

30 Jul, 2012

I was going to suggest it could be the grass,Carole..it's more than likely..have you told Harry this, and does it mean you will be cutting the grass from now on ? LOl.
We will have to make the effort and try to arrange when to go...even if you came over to ours one afternoon,as it's not far to go....we will sort something when we meet up on the 7th...:o)

30 Jul, 2012

Have only just read this Sandra, I have sent you a P.M and they must have crossed lol we both cut the grass but I quite like doing it so If Harry crosses it off his list I wouldnt mind ;0))

30 Jul, 2012

I haven't received your PM,Carole..what time did you post it?

30 Jul, 2012

My hayfever is set off by the grass & tree pollen. I am avoiding the chestnut tree up the park at the moment cos when its in flower it stinks & sets me off :-)

30 Jul, 2012

This morning Sandra, wil send you another now!

30 Jul, 2012

Got it Carole ..twice!! Lol..will reply tomorrow, thank you X
