A January distraction!

If we had our own version of BAFTAS for garden experts on the television who would be your choice and why?

There are so many gardening programmes and presenters to choose from, both past and present.

My choice would be Christine Walkden because of her enthusiasm and genuine love of plants. She always makes me smile whenever she appears on TV.

Tom Hart Dyke, Carol Klein, Chris Beardshaw and Geoff Hamilton ... all knowledgeable and enthusiastic ... but not irritating ;o)

... and John Challis presented a short gardening piece for TV ... he was interesting ...

I can honestly say that I love them all. There's not one of them that grates on me, and they all have loads of love for their work. Alan T. Will always be special as he was the one who got me started with Groundforce, a programme that many sneer at, but insired thousands. Chris Beardshaw is special too...because he is so knowledgeable and has a wonderful calm spirit. He suffers terribly from arthritis, so has had much to overcome. Sarah Raven always gives me something to aspire to...Her gardens and arrangements are so beautiful. carol Klein....like a good friend somehow......love them all! :) Rachel De Thame....lovely....

Oh would you believe Percy Thrower? I watched him working in the Blue Peter garden when I was growing up and I was hooked. Mr T has helped me throughout the years. Like Karen I love so many of them but unfortunately it's Mr Don I can't take to, sorry I know lots of you out there like him, he's just not for me.

I like Chris Beardshaw best. He appears on Beechgrove Garden in Scotland and he seems so professional by comparison to the rest of the team.

Like Karen I like them all, I cannot think of any that annoy me, as long as they are passionate about what they are talking about, then they have my vote....

As far as I'm concerned, Chris ...there's no contest...Alan and Geoff Hamilton , who have both inspired me to garden. I miss Alan on Gardeners World too, even my hubby used to watch it then ! He has such a great sense of humour.
Geoff was so down to earth and I would rate him the top one of them all ! I also Like Carol Klein and I'm sorry to say, but Toby is at the bottom ! Monty Don...well...middle of the road !

I too rate Alan T as my absolute fav now but Geoff Hamilton was the one for me, I have now got used to Monty whereby he used to really annoy me, I actually like most of them but especially Carol as she is the one with the gardeners hands and does get down and dirty, her gushing manner of talking gets on my nerves at times as does Christine but they do come across as gardeners not just presenters who are only reading from a card and posing for a camera which is the impression I get from some of them ...

I too love them all but AT maybe would be the one if I had to make a decision. I love him, but ssssshhhhh do not tell my oh, although I think he knows already. lol. Have been thoroughly enjoying his favourite 10 gardens programme. Such a cheery programme on cold winter days when there is no way that we can get out into the frost bitten rock hard gardens. Roll on Springtime. lol :O)

When my eldest was 3, we used to watch Pebble Mill at One, and he was fascinated by Peter Seabrook! He was always delighted when he came on - I think it was each Friday. My grandmother loved Percy Thrower, of course, and would sometimes say "Percy Thrower was just telling me..." so he obviously had the personal touch! Like Karen, I love them all - they all have their special strengths and enthusiasms. I think, if it had to be one, it would be Alan Titchmarsh. Entertaining, and so encouraging.

Geoff Hamilton was a legend and encouraged me into gardening in the 80's. He would never pay a fortune for something when he could make it himself for a fraction of the cost. I can remember his homemade coldframe and making his own tufa to put on an old sink, with a bit of yoghurt smeared on it to encourage lichen etc. to grow to give it that "old look".
I still have a few of his books and not long after he passed away, I had a wonderful day at Barnsdale.
Good times!

I agree with you - Christine Walkden :)

All TV gardening presenters have their merits ... there are none I dislike ...

... but I take this blog to be Wildrose asking us to mention one or more personalities in particular, and why we like those especially ...

Another two presenters also worthy of note, having contributed usefully to TV garden shows ... Jim McColl from The Beechgrove Garden ... he explains basic tasks in a straightforward, friendly way ... and Kim Wilde, who has done a lot to promote children's interest in gardening.

Aren't we lucky to have so many gardening programmes and presenters to enjoy and look forward to?
Mind you we are a great bunch of people on here so we deserve the best don't we?!

I think it is so lovely that Percy Thrower and Geoff Hamilton have remained in our hearts and that they have given us so many wise words that we will never forget.

Thanks for joining in with this.

yes... wonderful that presenters past and present, are remembered well ... together with the knowledge and advice they've passed on to many generations of gardeners. x

So many lovely presenters to choose from. Alan T for starters then I do like Christine, she is a real character and I have enjoyed her programme where she had flown in a hot air balloon around different large gardens. Monty Don is average and I love his dog who has become a bit of a star.

1. Monty Don and his dog
2. Alan T
3. Chris Beardshaw (and the Beechgrove team)
4. Joe Swift

I don't dislike any of the others, although some I sometimes find irritating and too 'gushy' but I still watch them.

Geoff Hamilton and Roy Lancaster.

Monty Drone isn't fit to wipe their boots.
