Come to the Isles of Scilly with me.

Here are some of this year’s photos of the Isles of Scilly taken in the middle of July.
I love to see the islands under blue skies and I got my wish this year – in fact the occasional white fluffy cloud would have been a relief!

In my previous blog on the Scillies, I showed you my luxury holiday accommodation. Well this year it has been extended and it well deserved its 5 star rating!

The next few pictures are of St Marys, the largest of the islands. We usually stay on St Marys and travel to the other islands by boat each morning.

We love the island of Tresco. It is very sheltered and the flowers there are exquisite. It was agapanthus time so the pretty blue flowers were at their best.

This is a lovely new cafe on Tresco which overlooks a very pretty beach. It is a very relaxing place to drink your coffee!

This is the less manicured island of Bryher. It is more raggedy perhaps but equally beautiful in its own way. I shall include the pretty shells that I picked up on the beach.

This is St Agnes which is perhaps the most rugged of the islands but it has many sheltered bays.

Time to leave the Scillies now but I hope you will be able to come with me again next year – all being well. I must make sure I go to St Martins next time as it has the best beaches but not many trees to give some shade on very hot days!

OH MY! What a holiday! I would so so love to go there....actually, not unlike some parts of Scotland....and when the weather is good......'when' being the big word! Aren't those shells beautiful? Oh, what a blessing it would be to live there...it is my idea of heaven, it really is! I must go there some day!

It all looks absolutely gorgeous Chris . . . thank you for sharing your beautiful photos. It looks amazingly quiet, too, for July! Boat trips are my idea of heaven, but I'm still trying to persuade my OH to give it a whirl :))

So beautiful. I am really surprised. I thought they were a few barren rocks thrown in the ocean.
Have you visited Harold Wilson's grave? It must be an interesting place to visit if you are a Labour supporter. Personally I am not. I am neutral.

I have only been to Tresco but fell in love with the islands thanks for the beautiful tour x

It all looks very idyllic, many thanks for the lovely tour, too far away for me to visit, so a virtual tour is ideal!

What a beautiful place - it's so nice to read of others experiences in - much better than a travel guide I think.
Thanks for taking us on a trip around the islands Chris!

Love it ! It's so beautiful and unspoilt. Just my sort of place.

So nice to see the other islands as well as Tresco. I would love to go in the spring time. These are stunning photos - thank you!

So lovely to read that you like the islands too, I was hoping that you would. Thank you for being so kind about them.

Costas - Harold Wilson's grave is in a beautiful church yard on St Marys which looks out onto Old Town Bay. It used to be marked with a simple wooden cross but now is grand and quite imposing. However, it is adorned with rows of pretty shells from the nearby beach and always a bunch of wild flowers or pinks grown on the islands in the summer. Mary Wilson, his wife, still lives on the islands and is now in her late nineties.

There were only 2 single B&Bs on St.Marys and they are fully booked for the following year by November. I went by train, took my camping kit in rucksack and shopping trolley. Camped on the YHA Penzance lawn, as the ferry has to be booked a day in advance. Then camped alone on the big campsite on St.Marys, it was the first week in September, the schools had all gone.
Went over to Tresco two days. The Geological Museum, the Ship and Lighthouse Museums in Penzance are very good. I didnt know about the Lido.
Met a couple from America at the YHA who live in a double decker bus half way up a mountain. They got the job as school caretakers but there was no accommodation. So they bought this bus, dad helped adapt it. When its the end of term they fill the tank, and tour all over America.
Couldnt bring it to Europe, so brought their camping kit,
and were using coach travel. I supposed they felt 'at home' on coaches !

How amazing that Mary Wilson is "still with us". I have a lovely book of poetry edited by her, and would like to write to her! Please could you tell us which island she lives on Chris . . . thanks :)

''Now in her nineties, she still lives in Westminster, a short distance away from Downing Street. She also retains the couple's holiday home in the Isles of Scilly.''

Sheila found the above info on Wiki. for you! Maybe you could write via Downing Street and ask them to forward it.

Thank you Gill - that's thoughtful of you. I was imagining that if I just wrote "Lady Mary Wilson, Scilly Isles" that it would find her. She is a feisty lady if she's still making the journey: not all that easy!

31 Jul, 2013

Well try it Sheila, bet the postie knows where she is!! Lol

I hate to write this, but when I was there people said
you could tell which was Mary Wilson's place because
it was the scruffiest cottage on the island.

What fantastic pics Chris, glad to see the luxury holiday accommodation has hade a 'Hotel Inspector' makeover. You do get about to the most beautiful places. What are you going to do with those lovely shells?:-)

1 Aug, 2013

Diane - if I was in my late nineties, I'm sure my cottage would be extremely scruffy too!

BA, The shells are on display with many others on a glass dish - the twins love scattering them just about everywhere when they come! Glad you like my beach accommodation - footwear provided is not so comfy though - as you see on the pic, I have to wear a wellie boot on one foot and a flip-flop on the other!

Mary Wilson's home is a small bungalow on St Marys and it certainly is very simple and plain. When Harold was at home they used to have a Union Jack flying from a flag-pole in their garden!!

Thank you Wildrose for showing us these photographs, as you know we spent our honeymoon on Tresco, 50 years ago, in the beautiful Island Hotel, apparently no longer a Hotel, how sad!! and we did not have time to visit the other islands, still so quiet and still so beautiful....would love to go back, perhaps one day?

Beautiful blog. Somewhere I have always wanted to visit but very unlikely (unless my premium bonds do something exciting!). I used to love the programme on TV showing the life there. Thanks for sharing :)

Lovely images. I can now see why my neighbour used to visit the islands every year.

28 Oct, 2013

We love it there but as we have been so many times , we have decided NOT to go there next year........I wonder how long that silly plan will last?!!!

28 Oct, 2013

Not long, I imagine, Wildrose, if - like me - you enjoy going back to favourite places!
