I have lots of fuchsias too. You can just leave them die back naturally. I cover the smaller ones with upside-down pots for the worst part of winter.

I just tidy them up and cut them down to half their height and then cut down to the soil in the spring when new growth just starts. Leave the fuchsia until you see new growth in the spring then, trim any unsightly growth.
