And so...I roamed around our garden...

I’ve been holding back on writing a blog because although I’ve taken photos of progress so far I’m having a problem getting my camera to put the pictures into my Picassa. Time to get the son-in-law at the puter again! lol So I regret despite taking about 8 or 10 photos I can’t include them in this blog….hope to soon :)

Changes to our original plan of turfing the back garden are now in the works. We are visiting a builders’ yard local to us tomorrow to price up gravel/rocks etc. instead of going for the turf option and then we will organize getting it done. It’s a low-maintenance option brought on by bad backs and creaking knees both hubby and I are experiencing….so it seems wise to go this route and make it more manageable in future years!

I’ve got primulas and violas in pots, growing nicely. I thought I’d lost my hydrangea but looked today and it’s putting out the smallest of shoots…just peaking up from the soil so I live in hope :) My lavender is bushing up nicely; catkins on the small willow tree, ivy growing in the right places to camouflage some areas in the garden. The camelia (autumn flowering) looks poorly with just a few leaves on it but I’m trusting it will spring into life soon. Daffs, narcissus & tulips are shooting up but no buds yet.

I have plants kindly given to me by Tetrarch which I’ve got in plant pots at the moment. Care instructions have come my way today from T. so I’m hoping they will all survive and grow into beauties :) The only one that may be doubtful is the Euphorbia but I’ll just be patient and I may get a nice surprise when it sprouts forth!

I’m really enjoying reading everyone’s blogs now that spring has sprung…we’re all so happy to get into our gardens once again.

I made one discovery in our garden today…not of the plant variety! In the rear corner of our garden, partially hidden in ivy was a bubble-wrapped parcel. On closer inspection it turned out to be two mufflers for a car (new). Our next door neighbour has a VW beetle that he is always tinkering with and I guessed they were his. Sure enough we took them to his door and found out when there was a break-in at two shops 3 weeks ago the mufflers were stolen from his locked and gated entry! (We live above our newsagent’s shop and it is amongst a row of other businesses…although we have retired.) He was delighted to get them back but it spooks me to know someone had been in our back garden unbeknownst to us.

Well….that’s a rather long typed blog….I really hope I can get some pictures up here before too long. Happy gardening friends.

sounds like your garden is all ready to go! should be lovely by summer. will be much easier with no turf ~ will you have raised beds too? i quite fancy some of those.
i dont use picassa to put photos on here ~ i can just plug my camera into the computer and it loads up to the computer then i find the pictures in 'my pictures' to put on here

Raised beds will be a later addition I think, Sticki....I think we will find it will be expensive to put the gravel etc. in at this stage so I'll see how it goes. It is in my mind to have the raised beds and I hope we won't have to forego the decision for too long.

It'll be the gravel, a curving path (with round stone) and a rockery for starters....and of course containers and climbers against various fences.

I do the same as Sticki with photos ... simples! Catkins sound lovely, W'lass, I hope you decide on a type of gravel tomorrow and that the choice isn't too bewildering! Look forward to pics of your Violas too. : o )

Looking forward to seeing your garden in the summer Jacquie, I have a curved path down my garden, too. Seriously thinking of the gravel option too, to save some work.

My photo`s go straight from camera to laptop as well, nothing too complicated, lol.
Be nice to see your photo`s Whiston even better for you when the main work is finished and you get to put your own stamp on it, thats when you`ll really enjoy it all.....

Looking forward to the photos, the work in progress sounds exciting, plenty ideas to keep you busy. Will you be trying veggies too? I know how you feel about people being in your garden that have no right to be there. They used to cut through ours to make their journey shorter, or to try and outrun the Police. I remember I watched in amazement one day (yes even in the day, they didn't care if we saw them or not) as a man climbed the old 6ft horizontal fence with a dog under his arm! Thankfully our neighbour put up an 8ft vertical fence, which is a lot more difficult to negotiate. They were blind to the fact that we live here, they were far too busy caught up in their own doings, to be bothered about what we might think of them being in our gardens, uninvited!

Glad your garden is coming to life - be patient - some of our trees believed to be dead are coming back now - I was getting fed up with the grass and it will be a lot easier to maintain :) Hope all goes good for you :):):)

I'm pleased you are going to have slabs etc instead of bits of grass. It will look much better and be less work aswell.
Looking forward to the pics now :)

You don't know who's about do you ! Fancy people snooping in your garden. I think we should be allowed to set traps for them !

Hi Jacquie

My word you have been busy - you sound as if you have a lot of interesting things about to happen in your garden.

I think getting rid of the lawn is a good idea as it will save you a lot of work with not having to keep the gras cut. I look forward to seeing some pics of it.

You are all so kind with your comments and it is nice to read that the gravel idea appeals to my GoY friends as well. :)

A work in progress that is for sure....Cinders I have taken a look at your photos and see what you meant about your curved path. It all adds to the interest in the garden doesn't it?

How's your plans developing, Hywel? Are you getting warmer days too so you can get out in your garden to do your revamp? And the pottery??

Pics are now up in my next blog.

I have been out a bit over the last few days but I haven't been well to do much - I've had some attacks of vertigo - very unpleasant :( But I've managed to do quite a lot really. I'm going to put a blog about it later on.
As for the pottery it's on hold at the moment until I can get a pug mill :)

8 Mar, 2011

What's a pug mill Hywel?

8 Mar, 2011

That vertigo is a real problem for you, Hywel....I do so hope it passes and I commend you for what you have accomplished. I'll look forward to your blog...and yes, what is a pug mill? Is it as pictured in the attached link?

Hope you can get it sorted soon so you can proceed with your pottery, Hywel.

Yes that's it. It's for recycling clay so that it can be reused.
You can't use clay if there are air bubbles in it because they will explode in the kiln. A pug mill saves 'wedging' - ie kneeding the clay like dough. That hurts my arthritic shoulders.

It sounds like you done a lot of work already Jacquie, I can`t wait to see the photos once you are ready to show them. I would feel a bit spooked if someone had been in my garden though I`m glad you were able to return the mufflers to their owner. I`m aching all over myself after two heavy days in the garden, I can almost hear my joints creaking...lol!
