This is a group of photos of the Rhododendrens at Meerkerk. The site there is 53 acres of natural woodland. The Rhodies are planted among the conifer evergreens, the grass is mowed only on pathways.

Some of the older large varieties stand over 20 feet tall and took several years to show the first blossoms. Gardeners who plant for future generations without hope of ever seeing their work blossom are a special breed who give a unique gift.

This picture doesn’t do the color justice. I should have written down the names of these guys while I was taking pictures but I didn’t have paper and pen.

You can find beauty in the darnedest places. This arrangement was in the ladies’ portapottie.

These last few are Azaleas from my patch. I them got off a sale rack at Home Depot. I love them, the flowers don’t last as long here as they would on the other side of the state because our humidity is too low. These suffered from the heavy snow, many of the branches were broken so I only got a few blooms.

Thanks, Jacque and Arlene. I am amazed at the number of varieties and colors. My photos don't do them justice.

Doon I think you would enjoy it. We got there the 23th of May, some of the blooms had begun to drop by then, you might want to go a week earlier. They have a website too, so you could contact them for the best time.

You mentioned the gardeners who plant for future generations - imagine the guys who started breeding these - how long would they have had to wait for the results? Respect!

Beautiful Sisty....and yours are beautiful too..love the colors you have chosen...I will have to try to get over to Whidbey some time to see these...north or south Whidbey?

Mine were on a sale table so I didn't actually choose colors, took what was left. Kind of a "Really, honey, they followed me home...can I keep them?" LOL
Meerkerk is south of Coupeville, east off the highway that comes from the Mukilteo ferry.

How was your meeting with Flash. Dan has gotten uppity lately. He wouldn't let me catch him without treats Saturday for the first time ever. Brat.

We had a nice breath together nose to nose...well his nose to my chin maybe..anyway..it was very sweet the way he likes to just stand up there and lean down onto my nose and mouth and take in my breath...then we had hugs..I reached both my arms around his neck and rubbed all the way to his shoulders on both sides as he leaned down over my left shoulder and squeezed with his neck..tried to have a nibble of my toe as I had forgotten and worn my sandles out there..I took a big chance and went into his paddock anyway..lol..no stepping on the toesies, but he thought they were worth a taste...lol..it was a very sweet meeting..then I went and got treats for all out of the horse trailer and eveyone was very whinny happy..lol.
