Picky Hedgehog

I’ve no doubt you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover a while ago, that a hedgehog was visiting our garden.
In order to encourage him, himself made a hog house and I purchased a branded cat biscuit.
All was going well. He visited each night for his supper and I had far less slugs and snails to bother about. We both seemed happy.
Then I visited a local GC and on sale were various pets foods…not branded you understand, but then can a Hedgehog read? I bought a bag of cat biscuits and once home, mixed them with the branded variety.
Last night, our visiter made it clear he had discerning tastes. In his dish this morning, left…the unbranded biscuits. All others eaten.
Whoever heard of a picky Hedgehog???

Great news waddy , I have bought cat food sachets and a dry mix as well .... mine lives under the privets at the side of the patio , he or she does make grumbling noises sometimes during the day when I walk round with my flip flops on lol

Youre as daft as me .....

Oh welcome to my world, although my problems are Harriet and Toffee, eat the food ok one week and decide they do not like it the next. Your hedgehog is spoilt, lol, I cannot put food down for ours as the dogs would get there first and the hogs would never get any, they are little fatties though, I have not seen any slugs in ages and plants are not getting eaten, if only the hogs could figure out a way to get the snails out, they would have a field day, lol...Forgot to ask, hope Richard is doing ok Waddy, xx..

Your hedgehog has become used to good cuisine :)

We used ordinary dog food, but you can buy especially tinned hedgehog food, looks like dog food, but more expensive of course!
Of course leaving food out at night encouraged feral cats and rats, so no more. Why couldn't the feral cats eat the rats?

Honey that is a very good question, guess its because they accept that they are also wild creatures, or because the rats are actually quite nasty and will fight back...

GG. I have to leave off buying 'wet' cat food as there are a few cats living round here and I don't want to encourage them...or flies. Daft? Well yes I admit to that lol!

Lincslass. I only put out the food last thing at night and I don't have any other 'pets' to worry about eating it. I think Hogs eat snail too. Thanks for asking.Richard is doing really well.

Hywel. I think you must be right!

Honeysuckle; No feral cats around here I'm glad to say and as for rats, we have mice in the garage and I understand if you have mice you won't get rats...and visa versa.

morrisons sell a dried hedgehog food at a reasonable price and it doesn't contain the harmful [to hedgehogs] components that are found in some cat and dog foods. safe for cats and dogs but causes kidney/liver problems. I usually chuch a handful of this pellet and mealworms out for the 2 [mother and adolescent?] that regularly come in about 9pm most nights. At first thought there was just one until I heard them and saw them pushing each other about.

Oh, lucky you SBG! Having two hogs.Mine also appears about 9pm. I've been in touch with Tiggywinks and they have actually told me to avoid giving mealworm as it can cause bone thining. My biggest problem these days is stopping the neighbourhood cats pinching the food...But I have plans!!

Hi Waddy

Use a plastic box

Get a plastic storage box about 12″ wide by 18″ long (or bigger)
Either use it with the lid on, or turn the box upside down. Cut a 4″ to 5″ hole ( about a large fist size) in one of the short ends.
Tape around the cut-out hole
Hedgehogs can be messy eaters, so put plenty of newspaper on the floor of the box
Put the food at the opposite end so a fox or cat cannot put their long foot in and pull out the food
Put a brick or heavy weight on top of the box, to stop it being knocked over or the lid pulled off.

thanks for that nutritional update Waddy, I remember being told about 15 yrs ago that they were a good food. looks like they suffer the same fate that we do with food advice ;o)
They don't get many but I will stop adding them.
there is a hedgehog house made of fallen branches and dead fern fronds that they do seem to use going by the prints in the fine silt/dust by the entrance.

That's great SBG. I hope they stay with you.
