Pigeon Deterant part 2.

The pigeons are still coming, but not quite as often. However, I couldn’t help noticing they don’t seem to bother with the rose bed…so perhaps …
After buying various roses…

This is the bed in which the Pigeons are causing so much mess

You can see where they have scattered the soil on the ‘grass’

So I removed all the plants already in the bed

I will replace them later…

The ground was turned over and fertilizer added.

The first rose is Lark Ascending, which I had in a large pot.

The rest of the roses …

The finished bed…Lets hope the pigeons keep away!

I'm glad you discovered a way of deterring the pigeons.
The bed looks nice now too :)

The best deterrent is netting I was reading the other day I wonder if you got some and tgrew it over the bed for a week would they not return. Glad they are nt coming as often. Your rose bed looks lovely.

Thanks for the comment 3d. I've tried netting (not all over the bed, that would look awful) but they just sit on it. They are still coming but not as often and not causing quite so much mess and damage.

I have the same Waddy they have even ripped apart my Aubretia any food plant will attract them if I had a gun I would shoot them as they mess all over my path and plants they also attract rats as they sit in the over hanging trees from next door church yard.

I feel exactly the same. I'm wondering if the council class them as vermin in the same way as rats? Might be worth a phone call or an email...

Lol, many years ago, before I knew him, my hubby had the job one night , escorted by the police, to go around London in the dead of night, clearing the pigeons. The police escort got bored so wanted a go. Their aim wasn't any good and they ended up shooting out the street lights.

7 Jul, 2017

Thank you for the giggle Jen! Lets hope police marksmen have improved a bit these days!

Oh my goodness Jen, I don't think I'll be calling on them in a hurry lol! Does anyone have a hawk I could borrow? The pesky pigeons are back, despite my best efforts, sigh! Back to the drawing board...

Owls are best Waddy they attack and kill pigeons.

7 Jul, 2017

:-). Maybe their aim was why hubby only did it the once, they probably blamed all the smashed lights on him.

Waddy, I wonder if there are decoy Hawks like you can buy decoy pigeons and ducks in gunshops. Maybe just seeing a decoy Hawk will be enough to scare them off. I have just googled it, "decoy hawks for sale uk" and there was a few on ebay ranging from under £10 to silly money. Might be an idea?

They dont work Jen unless you are willing to keep moving it around the garden I bought two moving owls recently they still come in the garden loud noises work.

7 Jul, 2017

I don't really want anything plastic in the garden, Jen. It's one of my pet hates. Interesting that you tell me the moving owls don't seem to work either. I am still thinking a real hawk is the only answer...but where from...?

7 Jul, 2017

Know what you mean about plastic things :-). There was ones like kites but then hang from something so wind moves it. As for real one, good luck :-).

7 Jul, 2017

I've seen something like that Jen, but not in this country. ..also I think it might scare the other birds away. I wouldn't want that. ?

10 Jul, 2017

Thats true, but I think your real one would do the same lol. How has it been, any less visits from your pigeons? Got my catalogue come through from David Austin, been pouring through it, it's like a kid and a sweet shop! :-)

I thought a real hawk would kill (sorry!) the Wood Pigeons and then the other birds would return...they tend to scare them off anyway. The visits from them lessened for a while, but they're back again, just as much. Great news about getting the D.A. catalogue, aren't there some gorgeous roses? My OH has now agreed to take me to visit too. Not sure just when, but in the not to distant future...can't wait!

Shame you don't live closer, had to take Shadow to vets, poor thing has developed a small infection from his op, anyway when I was there, there was a bloke who had come in for medication for his birds of prey. Could have asked him. Glad you going to visit DA. I can't wait, really looking forward to it tomorrow lol.

12 Jul, 2017

Hope the weather stays fine for you...oh and Happy Birthday for tomorrow :-)

Thank you :-).

Waddy, my neighbour & I have been happily watching sparrow hawks which have reared 3 chicks near our gardens. They are quite big now & have spread out around the area. I'm surprised that the other birds don't mob them the way they do the Buzzard when it flies over. They've been great to see. We have a pair of w pigeons around & also collared doves but they are not causing any problems

12 Jul, 2017

Sparrow Hawks? Buzzard? How lucky are you??? I perhaps wouldn't mind a PAIR of Wood Pigeons, but we have at least 6 and they are enormous! We also have a couple of pairs of Collared Doves, but they are no problem to me either.

13 Jul, 2017

I find that funny Hb. Squirrels versus greasy pole. They always seem to keep a jump ahead. I believe one can buy bird feeders that spin round & throw them off, but I should think they are quite expensive.

13 Jul, 2017

Oh HB, I also had to laugh at your squirrel antics. A dozen Wood Pigeons? I hope we don't end up with that many!

13 Jul, 2017

I've heard that those garden windmills keep the pigeons off but in my garden the best deterrent yet has to be my little dog, she's a cavapoo & won't tolerate any living thing in her garden or even on the telly come to that!
