Colour and true English.

Today i happened to catch our local news on the tv. They had a piece all about our native Bluebells slowly being erased by the cultivated French version. Apparently they have cross-pollinated after being planted in our gardens after being purchased from our garden centres.

I rushed out to check mine and to my delight, i’m glad to say that mine are true native English blubells!! Over the years i have left them well alone and they now pop up thicker every year. English bluebells only flower on one side of the stems and the petals tend to curl up at the ends.

While i was outside, i just had to take pics of the jewel in my garden! It is a rhododendron that we purchased on one of our trips to the fantastic Exbury Gardens. It is a limited edition. It is now 9 years old and for the first time last year, produced 1 single flower! Just look at it now – thanks to an incredible new feed i found. This is the result after just 3 feeds

After such a bad winter, i can’t but admire mother nature in all her glorious colour!!

Tiger I heard this before, a while back. I'd better go and check mine. I think french bluebells have wider leaves don't they?

I was always told they were spanish bluebells. either way they are interbreeding with our native H. non scripta.

Hello Guys, Great, all they said on the program was that English blubells tend to lean over on the one side with the flowers - nothing about leaves though. Cazzalyn, believe it or not, i got this feed from my local cheap supermarket. I went back recently to buy some more but sadly they did not have any left. All i can remember is that it was made in Germany!! Will have to wait till next year now!! Seaburngirl, They definately said French in the program, but hey French, Spanish let's just hope our beautiful English plants will continue!

Thanks all, Tiger.

I like the natural bluebells. They look more delicate. I hope the cultivated ones don't take over completely.
