I`m in my happy place planting Clematis and other things.

Oh what joy, I managed to get in the garden today and plant my new Clematis Wisley Cream and Princess Diana. They are on a Rustic South West facing trellis and this particular bed is very free draining and can get very dry in the height of summer so I planted as follows,
First I dug a large hole and incorporated some bonemeal into the bottom layer of soil, then I found an old piece of pond hose and this went into the hole together with the clematis.

After back filling the hole you can see the top of the pipe which allows me to get water right down to the roots especially when/if we have long dry spells.

This next photo gives the general overall look of the garden bed with bamboo canes marking where the clems are planted.

My last planting was of Stauntonia Hexaphylla which was put to climb against the kitchen wall where it will get protection from cold winds as it is quite a tender plant. The flowers are quite insignificant but are wonderfully perfumed, I can smell it already even though it is only in bud.

I hope the weather is as kind again tomorrow and I can get on with the rest of the garden.

Happy gardening to you all.

I, also, like the pipe idea! And nice beds and rocks!

good idea, love the rustic frame :O)

I am not sure about the pipe - too much water may rot the roots. I always put flat rocks around the stem to keep the roots cool so they would conserve moisture naturally. Best consult the experts on that one.

Thanks Sticki, Paul and Olive.
Sorry to disagree Diane but I have found that Clematis are very thirsty plants, and the idea of putting flat rocks round the stems, well when its very hots the rocks hold a terrific amount of heat and makes things worse.

Thirsty, hungry plants for sure, Stroller, I agree! So, with your "very free draining soil" a good way of getting water to the roots.

Doesn't it just make you feel so much better after doing a little gardening, Stroller? I like your choice of Clems and look forward to seeing their flowers later on ... :o)

Try feeling some rocks when you are out on the hills Stroller - they wont be hot !

But I`m not planting them out in the hills Diane, I`m planting to my gardens requirements and this bed gets full midday sun.
