September Roses

It rained all night and most of today but when it actually stopped around 4.30 this afternoon I decided to take a few pics of the poor roses that had withstood the downpour and was remarkably surprised at how well they had done. So decided to share with you a few that were still quite lovely despite the horrible weather and a pleasure to look at .
Pic 1 Aloha… a short climber with the most beautiful perfume.

pic 2 Dixieland Linda… a sport of Aloha but the perfume is not quite so intense

pic 3 Dublin Bay … quite a good perfume, a deep velvety red.

pic 4 Handel … gives a good performance its blooms changing from deep pink to lemony cream/white.

pic 5 Iceberg … climber has flowered well with a slight honey scent.

pic 6 Lazy days …Florabunda just keeps flowering on and on.

pic 7 Sophie`s perpetual … and it is perpetual quite a deepish cerise pink climber.

pic 8 Warm welcome … A small cheery bright orange bloom very good to liven up a dark corner.

pic 9 Love Knot … well what can I say for a small patio rose this seems always to have been in flower although there isn`t much scent its deepish red blooms are small but lovely.

I`m now going to look through the roses on here to see what I can add to the collection, and buy one or two bare rooted ones to get in ready for next year.

Lovely collection you've got there Stroller

This is interesting Stroller. It kind of proves what I had suspected, that my DA roses are generally pretty bad at withstanding weather, whereas the more 'tea' shaped flowers seem to cope better generally speaking. I wonder, does anyone know about the single flowered roses and rain? Only I've noticed that my R. 'Dortmund' a single red, has done pretty much better than any of the others in my garden this year. I do love Roses and would really miss them, but I'd be happy to swap some of mine for ones that don't turn to mush at the first shower.

My Iceberg suffered terribly with the rain. The large headed climbers did better.

great stuff Stroller - look so pretty

They're all pretty but I like the pink ones best I think. Pink seems to suit roses very well. I'm glad to see them all enduring the rain so well.

Lovely photo`s Stroller, its grand to see them all coming out after waiting all summer, like you I`m hoping the rain doesn`t spoil them, have to say the perfume from some of them was gorgeous tonight though, it always seems stronger to me after the rain so not all bad....

Isn`t it strange Linda The Iceberg climber has been one of my best performers.
Karen ... the only singles I have are Wild thing and Ballerina both bush roses (cluster type) neither have performed very well this year ~ nowhere near as many blooms as other years.
Lincs ... glad to hear your still enjoying the perfume ~ nothing quite like it.
Thanks Paul, Suey and Hywel.

Lovely Stroller, a few of mine are still braving the weather. Iceberg has done well & it is only a year old.
I got my mum for her birthday Gertrude Jekyll, such a beautiful rose & the scent like no other I have smelt.

Hi Carole ... Haven`t heard of Hilda Ogden hope she`s prettier then her namesake looked.
Ta BA ... my pash too, am looking at the moment for two new ones for the new bed.
Willi ... my friend has Gertrude its beautiful and the scent it devine. I have had two of them so far and neither of them did any good, don`t know why as every other rose I have bought has done well.

Apuldram Roses have good offers on roses at the moment, I've used them twice and found the quality good and prices low compared to other on-line comapanies:-)

They all look really lovely, Stroller. My most favourite of all roses, which shrugs off any kind of weather and as long as you have room for it, is Bonica. It just flowers and flowers from early summer to Autumn. It doesn't have much perfume though. My one rose which although is named after my favourite gardener Geoff Hamilton just goes to mush at the slightest bit of rain, even the buds drop off. I have been known to say to my hubby that I should put an umbrella over it!

BA, shall go to their site and have a look.
Rose ... my friend has G Hamilton and has the same probs as you, I didn`t buy it for this reason although he was my favourite gardener.

You would have thought they would have given Geoff a better quality rose to match the man, Stroller!

Rose ... I agree he was such a reliable man they could surely have come up with something better.
Hi TT ... glad you like them.
BA ... I have just ordered a couple of bare rooted roses from DA the ever reliable Compassion and L`aimant the latter one because it reminded me of the perfume I used in my late teens.
