Heady with delight !!

As it was far too hot to go in the garden today we decided to have a day out in the countryside. It had to be somewhere that had a good plant nursery, and as I had been trawling the net for roses we spied upon Country Garden Nurseries in Hadnall, Nr Shrewsbury in Shropshire. To be fair it was not as nicely set out as David Austins place. However, there must have been hundreds of roses to choose from.
I could quite easily have broken the bank, but restrained myself and came away with just two.
The first one being `Hot Chocolate` which is a real deep rusty red which was bought for the colour.

The second one is `Margaret Merrill`, I think this is one of the most heady fragrance of any rose – I just wish we had smellovision.

Partially open,

When fully open is at least 4" across and as anyone of you that has it will know the perfume is just divine.

I`m chomping on the bit now, can`t wait to get out in the garden first thing and to get planting.

Beautiful...I think Hot Chocolate has been an absolute hit on here this year. I got one, Scotkat has one, Oliveoil, Spritz....loads of us have chosen this one, isn't it beautiful, that's it in my avatar Stroller! I wish I could smell the other one, I'll keep an eye out for it at the GC.

oh that is lovely ~ i would really like hot chocolate having seen the one spritz has; and when we went to david austin it was very nearly margaret meryl but in the end i didnt ~ i really wish i had got it though ~ i can remember it had a wonderful scent.

Karen do you think this means that most of us are Choc-aholics then. As for the M Merrill one sniff and your hooked.
Sticki you passed up a treat.

Very pretty but I really cannot squeeze anymore in (sigh).

Wonderful buys Stroller. I havent got room either, unfortunately.

I took a rose out today...deuill de Paul Fontaine....don't get it anyone, it was covered, really covered with black spot!

3 Aug, 2011

Both look nice. I do have 2 Margaret Merrill. Their perfume is exceptional although not as strong as with some other varieties.

Coshad, which are your strongest perfumed roses please?

3 Aug, 2011

They are both beautiful! I love roses especially scented ones :)

That's weird Karensusan, I cut back a rose, that for the last three years had the most terrible, well it wasn't so much black as brown spot. And the rose was Constance Spry! Which is supposed to be very disease resistant. I sprayed and cleared away every single leaf, but every year, just the same, so I'm digging it out when everything else has died down around it.

Stroller, on a brighter note, yours are really beautiful! I love a rose with a good scent, and I really want to see 'Hot Chocolate'! It looks lovely!

Karensusan, just saw your comment and my strongest perfumed rose, is Gertrude Jekyll, it's on a hot patio and you can smell it before you see it!

I had the same problem with my Peace rose..brown spot? I keep cutting off the bad bits but it still seems to come back..hardly flowers really..had one earlier this year..and now today I have a new bud! :)

I'm pleased you enjoyed your day out in the countryside, Stroller and what's the point of going unless there's a nursery too? Love both those Roses, and love the expession 'smellovision' ... lol! :o))

i shall get one stroller, i dont want to miss out!!
think it was one of my favourites ~ im blaming OH for the 2 pink ones we bought ~ i dont like pink!!

3 Aug, 2011

David Austin says that Jude the Obscure is the strongest scented rose, think I read it in his latest handbook so if you buy that one Karen you should be able to tell us if it is true. lol.

3 Aug, 2011

its a sad story tho.

3 Aug, 2011

Karen its sad isnt it when you have to throw out a rose not because of the flower but because of the black spot, I did this last year with Constance Spry. Like Libet I cleaned up all the fallen leaves I even sprayed which I hate doing but it had to go.
As for my most perfumed rose until MM it has to be Aloha.
Shame Sticki - I love pink.

we could swap!!!

3 Aug, 2011

Aloha and Jude the Obscure......I already have Gertrude and yes, that one is an amazing scent, but the strongest scented rose I have in my garden is Chartreuse de Parme, and the flowers are huge too!

4 Aug, 2011

both of which i have lol ..............m.merrils getting ready to flower again ,,,, and ust waiting for h.choc to as well . i loved the colour as well , in fact i put that one in a pot !!
a very nice choice, another one to get is birthday girl ........ it has never stoped flowering .

4 Aug, 2011

Does it have a very strong perfume though Cristina?

....Sticki, yes Jude the Obscure...you only have to say the title and you feel sad already! In spite of that, I still love Thomas Hardy's novels! We had to do the Mayor of Casterbridge at School and I loved it. Then I went on to read some more...my friend at college was an avid reader of Hardy. Apparently his best work was in his poems....but I'm not much of a poetry fan I'm afraid...perhaps I would like his though.....

4 Aug, 2011

what colour is birthday girl cristina? is there a birthday boy?

karen, i really like hardy [although i havent read one for a bit] we did mayor of casterbridge at school too, also return of the native and far from the madding crowd. i shall have to look at the poems, i think i have looked at a few but cant remember now. we did wordsworth and milton; and one shakespeare ~ didnt like that!

We did Keats...absolutely awful!

Karen. I now have only a few roses but in the past I used to have a mini rose garden with more than 250 varieties. They were all ruined by disease and decided to keep only a few. The strongest perfumed rose I now have in my garden has no name as I misplaced the label. I want to buy a couple more but I must first find the name. Second comes the climber Etoile de Hollande Very scented big flowers. Third comes the bush Sheila's Perfume as in my avatar. Fourth comes the thornless climber Zephirine Drouhin. A few other with less perfume include Margaret Merrill, Korresia, Amber Queen and the David Austin roses. The most scented rose I ever had but no longer was Perfume Cloud the world's most scented rose perhaps.

4 Aug, 2011

i think i have seen/smelt perfume cloud??? i love zephrine drouhin ~ even if it is pink!

4 Aug, 2011

I love those 2 roses Stroller but unfotunately haven't got room for any more.My most fragrant are Icecream which is big and blousy and Fragrant cloud. I have Zephrine drouhin Stickie but this one does seem prone to blackspot and although its a climber has only flowered once this year. The good thing about it is that its thornless.

4 Aug, 2011

So you have `fragrant cloud` what do you think of it Rose, Coshad feels it is the most fragrant of all roses. I was toying with the idea of `icecream` but decided on `dixieland linda` which is a sport of Aloha. The blooms on this have been fabulous but am slightly disappointed
that the scent is rather weak.

4 Aug, 2011

Apologies. I must correct the name to read "Fragrant cloud". Old age you see.

4 Aug, 2011

it does have a scent ........... K. , sticki its a lovey peachy orange , there is a pic on my page !! dont know it there a boy to go with it tho lol ............... its a very diff flowere , edged wth a little white . i have it in a large blue planter

5 Aug, 2011

I agree with Coshad ,Fragrant cloud has got to be one of the most perfumed.
