a recent aquisition but I love its colour, im not a fan of pink normally but this is such a bright spot in the garden and i think the pink is getting slowly darker as the temperatures drop.

Oooh, that is stunning!! I have a tiny little seedling of a pinky one called 'phoenix' and I'm wondering if it will be like this next year! It's gorgeous!

i only bought it a few weeks ago, not too expensive or i wouldnt have bought it!
i only hope it will have survived as far as next year ~ perhaps it should have a little fleece of its own?

Wow, I've never seen an Acer like this before! Breathtaking...

A little horticultural fleece might be a good thing as it is so young sticki! I have mine in a very sheltered spot in a pot, but I may put it in the greenhouse when the frosts arrive.

How unusual....never before seen such a bright colour. Hope it gets through the winter and adds some brightness to your garden for many years to come.

Beautiful, nothing wrong with pink, it goes well in any garden. If it were me I would keep it indoors this winter if possible, then plant it in a shady spot. Do you know it's name?

Very pink, lovely.

the label calls it Acer 'Marlo' and describes it as a japanese maple. they had a lot in the garden centre.

thanks heron, at the moment it is only about 15" tall so i may put a cloche over it rather than dig it up??? or would that not be enough protection? maybe a cool bedroom if i brought it inside or the garage ~ but there is no light in there.

i wish i had put mine in a pot now like karen and susan that would have been much more sensible ~ not too late tho!

It's lovely. I like pink lol.

That's very attractive! I think I'd protect it too.....

I've just seen your pink Acer, I think it looks really great! What have you decided to do with it? Just cover it with a cloche or dig it up, put it in a pot & move it to your cool bedroom?

i think i will put it in the pot in the hall ~ which is fairly cool until the leaves drop off and then put it in the garage? would that be ok?

As it won't need its leaves during the winter, they'll have fallen off anyway that should be fine. Just check it out on a monthly basis just to make sure it's not too dry. The roots are still alive after all - you want them to continue that way I imagine! LOL! :-D

thats great, thank you.
i have seen one of those small moveable green houses with a plastic cover in the garden centre ~ it seems to be very cheap so i am tempted to get it ~ but does it really have enough protection through the winter when it can get to minus 6 -9?

23 Oct, 2010

I have had one of those greenhouses on my balcony for the last 7/8 years. Last year I had to take off finally the plastic as it had become all broken up. The wind ripped off the plastic in the door a couple of years before. I still use it, during the summer it serves as shelving/tomato support & during the winter I wrap a couple of big plastic bags (from mattresses) around it &, although unsightly, it serves me well to keep plants I otherwise wouldn't be able to keep over winter.

It certainly won't give any protection for temps more than a degree or two below zero/freezing but I haven't lost any plants in it as far as I can remember. But then neither will your garage. Just as long as you can keep the rootball from freezing the low temps shouldn't worry your tree.

thats a great help, thanks balcony.
ive been out and bought one now ~ it came with a fleece cover as well so that should help
