blue in the garden

Blue seems to be a hard colour to find in the garden but when it does appear it is stunning, I have only just bought this gentian but even so it surprised me with the intensity of the blue! I love it, it cheers me up like blue summer skies.

Very lucky you, I would give anything to be able to grow those, Meconopsis too but my soil isn't right. The colour really is outstanding.

It is a very nice shade of blue, ST. Sure hope it thrives in your garden. :)

There's two late flowering plants - caryopteris and ceratostigma - if you want a blue 'fix' in autumn

Ceratostigma is a beautiful blue, I have three. I once tried the lime tolerant Gentian but the colour wasn't as good.

Ceratostigma and blue salvias do it for me. Must try a gentian. Enjoy the blues!!

Funny, recently we were on a country walk and happened upon some wild gentian. Yours is much more dramatic, of course, and is the very blueness of blue. I see that Lulu33 has suggested blue salvias. Visit my blog to see a recent pic of a terrific blue variety called 'Merleau'.

hello kowhai, country walk with gentians in uk? sounds lovely.
i read your blog, sounds as if your garden is a bit like mine ~ i have a copper beech which i love and then several oak trees shading all of the garden, but it helps to make the soil acidic to some extent??

Lovely photo! We were in the Dolomites in April last year and were taken on a wildflower walk: we saw carpets of bright blue gentians - you would love it! Another good blue flower is Buglossoides ceruleapurpurea, good ground cover for shade if you can find it.

I went to the dolomites a few years ago, i think in july[?] and on a wild flower walk, sadly there were no gentians! I would love to have seen them in their natural state. I shall try to look for Buglossoides, thank you!
